2025 Lions free agent profile: Is Marcus Davenport worth the risk?

Feels like Moseley all over again. I’d pass and move on. Unless Davenport is blessed by baby Jesus this offseason

Outside of a fully incentivized contract, I can’t get there. Moseley too.

What’s the risk? He’ll cost basically nothing.

No more dudes who get hurt. I know why holmes doesn’t, but it doesn’t work at all.

As DE#4 for Vet minimum? okay.

2 sides to that coin. Not just about money. The risk is you keep him on the 53 man roster and have to cut someone who plays the same position. Then Davenport gets injured after 2 games and the guy you cut has already joined a different team. So now you are scrambling looking at practice squads again.

That’s a risk if we’re signing him as a starter (like last year). But this year he’d be a cheap, rotational piece at best. We’re talking edge 3/4, and those types of guys bounce around rosters.

The upside to me FAR outweighs the risk. Like they aren’t even in the same ballpark.

I just have zero faith he can even make it through training camp. Would rather give the roster spot to someone like Al-Quadin Muhammad as a veteran backup. He gave us some decent snaps.

Agree to disagree then (though I think signing Davenport doesn’t stop us from bringing Muhammad back). Davenport at his best is very good. Like borderline elite. Sadly we only got to see it in a few snaps this past season and no, you can’t count on him to stay healthy, but for as a backup for peanuts, so what? You’d really rather have some guy who’s bounced around the league? We can sign that guy after Davenport gets hurt.

Just like we did Muhammad.

I’d be okay with it for vet minimum with incentives for games players and snaps. But guaranteeing him any real money no thanks. We paid Moseley about 8 million over the past 2 seasons for 2 snaps.

If we were bringing him in on last year’s contract to rotate as our #2/3 edge, I might be with you. That would give me pause. But that’s not what he’ll cost this year. It’s like… you didn’t care that Peko went out injured right? I mean it stunk, don’t get me wrong, but mostly garnered a collective shrug around here. He was a replaceable guy in a replaceable spot. That’s the level of loss Davenport would be this coming year.

I see your point. I do think drafting an end to develop makes sense too. Hutch is the future. But after that? Z is old. Davenport is always injured. Cominsky is a goner. Paschal aint the answer. He’s better inside. James Houston is long gone. Not much youth on the edge. Levi played a ton of edge for us last year and I think he may be gone too.

Pass rusher at 28? Might make sense if the board falls right.

Sure, if the right guy is there I agree. But I wouldn’t reach on a guy because of it. If we have to kick the can down the road again, so be it. We’ll still have a good DL - as long as we don’t have such crazy terrible luck.

How’s this draft in terms of pass rushers? Deep? Slim pickings? Somewhere in the middle?

We know Holmes is willing to make trades for guys he loves.

It’s pretty good (the iDL class is much deeper though), and there are some guys who could very much interest Brad at 28. But for me personally once Stewart, Mykel Williams and Carter are gone - and all 3 probably will be - I’m less interested early. There are some pretty good 2nd round options like JTT, Roberts, Kennard, etc… but they might not make it to 60 either. And of course the later they go, the more time they may need to develop.

I really like Femi Oladejo, but he’s basically a baby deer at this point. Just moved to edge from LB, but despite looking like he’s about 240, weighed in at 260 with long arms at the Senior Bowl. Could easily add weight. But he’s not ready yet. His traits probably mean he goes day 2 though.

Could Be the difference in getting a 4th round comp pick or not

Let someone else have him

If he costs basically nothing? You’d have to combine him with someone a lot more expensive, and if that happened the more expensive guy would be affecting the formula on his own anyway.

Also if we sign him before the start of the season like the Raiders just did, I’m pretty sure he won’t count against it either. He would have never actually made it to FA that way.

The one argument I hadn’t considered. It really does only take one desperate GM to overpay. I have no belief he will get us a 4th, but he could become part of the formula.

He could also find out that no one is willing to pay and could be a cheap return. Sometimes I suppose it really can benefit us to let some of our free agents test the waters.

Edit just reread your post. You are spot on
@Hins0042

So if CD3/Levi signs with Jets/9ers and gets us a 4th round pick….and we signed 1 guy let’s say for example Evan Brown. Then they would cancel each other out and we would get no picks.

If teams sign guys like
Davenport
AQM
Iffy Melinfonwu

We can still be players in free agency

AND still get 4th round comp pick for CD3 or Levi

Never was.

Kill it with fire.
