Oh sure, he doesn’t lose all of them. In fact he wins the vast majority. But he loses more than you’d like from this level of a prospect.
It actually hasn’t been as much of an issue since he’s moved to T because the strength counters he’s facing from edges are much less powerful than those he typically faces inside. He’s able to recover much better (that and he’s really improved his hands). Also they’re not asking him to identify stunts/blitzes as often, which was another of his issues (though I think that would be almost completely mitigated by playing next to Frank/Decker, etc…)
Right, whereas I have no idea about recruiting until I start the draft process and hear about them in retrospect. It comes up a lot from Trevor, Joe and Ryan, they follow recruiting really closely.
I’m too lazy to do any cut-ups myself, and there’s not nearly as much out there right now as there will be in a month or two, but I found a couple of examples that show exactly what I’m talking about. They’re very indicative of the way he tends to lose. And the first is a good example cause it shows him being late recognizing a stunt.
Obviously those are cherry-picked examples and he wins far, far more than he loses, but they show pretty clearly the areas he tends to struggle. I also like that they’re a year apart, because he’s been losing that way - when he loses - his whole career.
Those are both pre '24 though, right? It’s my understanding that even before he slid out his play had picked up this year. At least I read a couple draft takes with that opinion.
His first game starting at tackle was against Penn State and Abdul Carter, so understandably he looked pretty bad in pass pro that game, but other than that I can’t remember him playing very poorly at tackle.
Yes, and he has improved, I won’t deny it. But I watched two games of him inside this season and while it happens a little less frequently, it still happens, and still for the same reason.
That’s part of why I originally said he looked even better at tackle. It has thus far mitigated some of his main issues. I don’t know that it can continue - there are a lot more power edge-rushers in the pros than what he’s faced since he shifted outside - but so far, so good. I’m really interested to watch his tape against Oregon since he surely had some reps against Burch, who is the type of guy who could theoretically give him problems (though I’ve heard he had a great game).
Honestly this is starting to feel a little nitpicky on my end. I like the guy quite a bit, I have him ranked in the late 2nd/early 3rd which is sorta the consensus right now. I’m not abnormally low on him or anything. It’s just I have some issues that thus far keep him from rising much higher.
Yeah, and that will certainly have to be considered. Burch is known to have games like that, and he doesn’t always play to his strength. But it’s another data point at least.
Oh, that might be a pretty good comp overall. I’ll have to go back and watch some of Hand. I think he might have been quite a bit longer than Burch will be, but I could be off about that.
Burch is clearly a more explosive athlete and Hand is definitely more naturally powerful but in terms of the unreal underlying talent and general disinterest in playing it’s definitely a match.
I know we don’t need a RB but Singleton impressed me last night on PSU. He looks like a good nfl back. Can run, and catch. Shifty, good size. First time I ever saw him play.
