49ers interview Lions' Townsend for vacant DC spot

Makes you wonder if a contending team wants to give more draft picks to an already better team than them, just to get a DC?!?!?

honestly forgot about Townsend, but would he be an option for the DC spot here if Glenn leaves? I find it hard to believe he would leapfrog Sheppherd, but you never know.

You allso have Terrell Williams who has a ton a DC experience.

None of the guys on the current staff have experience as a full Defensive Coordinator. Townsend is serving as Defensive Pass Game Coordinator and Williams as Defensive Run Game Coordinator. Shepp is the developed internal succession plan for DC.
This could be why Townsend is taking the interview with the 9ers.
The Lions have a lot of good coaches and there is a Halo effect to being on a great staff with a Great Culture.
You also have to remember the NFL hiring guidelines require at least 2 minorities or women be interviewed for Coordinator or above level positions.
This is giving Townsend an opportunity for exposure he may have not had otherwise.
I still think the 9ers bring back Saleh but it is good experience for Townsend.

FWIW, Justin Rogers in the comments sections of yesterday’s article on coaching vacancies said he hasn’t heard of Agnew mentioned as a GM candidate in this cycle.

You are correct, Terrell Williams was an assistant HC in Tennessee, never a DC. It was Todd Wash who Campbell had his first two years who was the previously DC.

I think its more likley that teams just aren’t interested. I think his “presence” in the limited pressers he’s done is not so good.

Saleh is interviewing for Head Coach opportunities as well.
Saleh is the obvious choice if he doesn’t get another Head Coach gig and Townsend checks the box for women and minority interview and possible backup plan.
