Honestly, I think we’re all just about surrounding the same table with regard to Willis. There might be some on one end and some on the other, but it’s still the same picnic area. As much as we’re talking about him, it’s really just about how high he could go or how bad we’d like him. (thinking out loud)
When you start seeing mocks with him at 5, 2 doesn’t seem too far away though, you know?
Right. It’s just from my end of the table, I think anyone mocking him at 5 is way off lol. I think 11 is as high as he goes (because I think the Panthers and Broncos will sort out their QB issues via FA/trade).
Perhaps there is a little confusion that I myself created. I posted this article in the Willis thread bc the part I was really interested in was the Willis piece. I am fine eating crow about Willis, I really am not out wanting the kid to fail or not get drafted in the first round. My initial convo about willis a while back was simply sharing information from knowledgable people that I know who think he has a lower grade then alot of people around here think he has…ergo “Great news guys! If you really want Willis, perhaps we can get him later in the draft”. It was met with some suspicion, fine, I can appreciate that and it is expected. But if the take is I disagree simply bc it differs from my opinion then that is silly to me. I am not sure who will get drafted in the first round, I would Imagine 1 or 2 (pickett, Howell) perhaps do get drafted in the first round. Just adding this to the conversation that there is actual talk that this is a poor class and that Willis is not as good as some might be pumping him up to be (first round). I will eat crow if Willis is drafted in the top 15. I will go on record as saying I don’t think he is a first round qb. But I am also not rooting against the kid. I like him. Think he is a good kid, great character, an alpha. I am also not ignoring his shortcomings. But i am not a scout and I am not an expert in this…but I do trust those I know who are in the business that I know. I do come from a football family where people made it a profession. I did not and I do not pretend to. I am also someone who really does trust expert opinion to a point to make an informed decision for myself in all aspects of life. I will say this…some of the people that I am friends with said after the bye week it was Ben Johnson’s job at OC…and if you go back and check…I was saying it was Ben Johnson’s job the entire time…there is some credibility to my friends. Actually there is a lot…but I will eat crow if Willis is a top 15 pick…and I will be very happy for him just the same.
Funny thing then. You aren’t willing to bite the apple unless he goes top 15. I’m saying he’ll go from 10-20. Not very far apart at all. I just think he’ll go that high and ultimately succeed, no one will have proof for or against that for a few years at least. I’ve got a 2nd round grade on him. But he’ll go higher due to supply and demand. Banking on the “it” factor, which I believe he has.
I am saying he isn’t a top 15 pick. There are people on this den that have said he is a top 15 pick. I will eat crow if he is a top 15 pick. I personally don’t think he is a first-round pick.
What tools are you using to assess him and determine a grade on him?
It’s really not, the Chiefs traded for Montana.
The problem is, how often a QB becomes available…and whether you can be that one team that gets him. Most QB’s would probably block a trade to Detroit.
I’m not running a QB academy. Not a Midwest Scout. I’m a dude with an opinion. I’ve written plenty on the guy, so I’m not going to regurgitate it here. Every prospect has strengths, weaknesses, competition level, intangibles etc. to look at. I see plenty of inconsistency in his current state. I see a lot of good, that I believe can be replicated more, with time and coaching. Raw tools are walking in with a top 3 type arm and a super-quick release. Jarred Goff has a good arm. But he’s a wind up guy. Ability to evade, prolong the play, throw to all levels on the run. Then the wheels. So for me he walks in the NFL door with a top 3 arm with just as fast a trigger as I’ve seen anyone right now doing it. Then wheels, which are also going to be “among” the better pure runners in the NFL. These are all things that puts him in that solid 2nd round territory. Regardless of the competition, regardless of the messy footwork and risky heaves.
I think he’d have a chance to succeed here, because we could give him time and training, a great oline, good rushing attack, top TE if we did nothing more. By the time he’d be called upon, we’d have a couple more elite weapons and much more talented defense as well.
And that’s honestly all any of us are. There are people who know a lot more then any of us who say he isn’t a first round qb. So perhaps they might be on to something. Perhaps it’s smoke, perhaps it’s real….but like I said……they have a lot more at their disposal to make a grade on a player.
They can be totally right regarding quality. But it only takes one team to fall in love. My bet is at least one really does. The team that does this, hires experts too. We shall see how it goes.
