Are the Detroit Lions falling in love with Malik Willis?

I’m out. Tyrod Taylor vibes.

I can understand your confusion.

We’ve talked about what teams expect and how he’s headed.

We’ve talked about what the media will report.

We’ve talked about fans reaction.

My position on him has been been 1st rounder based on skillset. He’s not going to fall to 32.

My commentary on the Senior Bowl is that what we see is not revealing anything about Willis. We see so far what is already known to be the case.

But the media and thus the fans will go blue it up. It won’t stop here, it will continue through the combine and proday.

Make sense now?

Cooper Kupp is not your franchise QB; he’s a receiver. I’d definitely take a receiver in R3 in a way I’d never consider it with a QB.

Just this last year the Lions have tried how many receivers? 4-5 receivers - of which 1 has been great, 2 have been worth keeping with us and 2 or so have been poor.

You get one shot with a QB - and it takes about 2-3 years to find out if it was a good choice or not.

You can ‘want’ whatever you like. But it’s not going to happen. And the idea of mitigating risk plus moving beans and getting additional players is like saying … I want Willis, I want extra players and I don’t want any risk.

You either take Willis at 2 or you don’t get him. You have to make a choice. It’s not an especially difficult concept.

Nothing you are saying is wrong. It’s just the player in question is not the player who fits that description. He is way too inconsistent. So for my money give me Hamilton and David Bell. At some point go get Damone Clark and fill it in with other pieces. It’s not the year to take a qb…unless he is that special. If he is that special then he is going 2 because the jags already have TL.

First off I’ve never tried to boost his stock. I said “I’ll be watching for him”….saw some highlights but I have never seen a full live game of Willis playing. So I never boosted his stock. The only players I have pumped in this draft is Thibs and Hutch

Willis will need to sit at least a year to try and learn how to read an NFL defense. He struggled to do this at Liberty but had the physical tools to overcome this.

If he falls to the 3rd I would consider taking him unless there is someone else I really love available at the pick.

I’m assuming some team will fall in love with him and seriously over draft him.

Agree Willis is extremely raw, footwork is rough, reading the D is a serious issue, another 1 read and run QB.

You can see the arm and running ability, but you can see how raw he is. He’s probably 2 yrs away at best. He has a ton to learn and not sure he ever gets there.

Love the athletic traits, leadership, and toughness he plays with. Also think he has the highest upside.

No way I touch him in rd 1, mid 2 at best for me, and he won’t be there. Someone with a much better roster, that can take the gamble, will do just that. He may have the highest upside, but it comes at a high risk.

But he’s not worth the #2 overall pick, no matter how you slice it…it’s not an especially difficult concept.

Yea I actually think we are thinking the same on this.
Sorry for the confusion

I reread the thread and stand corrected, you were bringing him to attention with the thread you started.

Sorry

A team like who? I’m always curious when people say this. What team with a better roster can wait 2 years for their QB to pan out?

I’d bet if you laid out your ideal offseason that you feel is realistic, and then laid out the positions and who’s there, you’d be surprised what’s really left to fix. If you build around Goff, yes you get there faster. But you get there with Goff, and no chance if he can’t bring you a ring. Then you end up selling your future to move up and take a swing not unlike the one we’d be taking with Willis.

This time of year there are more smokescreens than a level in Spy Hunter.

Any team with say 7-10 or better, especially with a new HC, maybe someone like Carolina, the Saints

Our roster is bottom of the barrel. You don’t waste a top.pick on a hope and a prayer.

I never liked the argument that if he was that good why would he not go earlier. There are tons of reason why Willis should not be a top 10 pick. Those reasons do not mean he shouldn’t be a top 30 pick.

I’m not using that argument. The convo is about number 2. Wanna take him later, fine.

I’ve been talking Willis up for sometime myself as well.

If we draft a QB then he’s the guy that most interests me but I’m not taking one at 2OA.

However I think we’re better off passing on a QB for another year. I want to improve the overall roster more to give that young QB the best opportunity for success.

If the Lions believe that Willis is the Rodgers of this draft or the R Wilson of this draft then by all means draft him at 2OA.

I’m not saying he is or isn’t and I won’t loose sleep if they draft him although at 2OA it seems high.

Although I’m not sure I sit him, Lions have a good OL and running game which should allow him time to grow without getting killed every Sunday. Then trade Goff and sign a better backup than currently on the roster.
