Arnold is he a bust or a project?

He gave two easy big completions to start the game ,always on top of the receiver before the ball reach .Is he any good ? Skinny like a balla dancer too , I am not sure he is smart enough to adjust even though hyped in draft day . He clearly interfered on the last 3 rd down play :joy:

Neither. Heā€™s a rookie.

the kid is sticky as hell. heā€™s never beaten badly. he has make up speed. he just has to learn you canā€™t be grabby. or you can, but you have to hide it better.

he also has to learn how to flop better on offensive pass interference shoves.

Remind me more of terry fair and Bryant Westbrook

Arnold is really good. Heā€™s playing full-time as a rookie.

Makes many mistakes still but heā€™s nearly the best 1:1 pure CB the lions have had in 4 years

Well maybe your memory isnā€™t good or your football isnā€™t good, because if you see them 2 in Arnold maybe your

What I am confused about is why our guys donā€™t turn to look at the ball at the end of the routes. Arnold rarely does. But this has been a common theme. Iā€™ve never seen this problem arise so consistently on any team Iā€™ve watched (or on any opponent weā€™ve planed, including Houston yesterday). This seems like a coaching fail, but I really donā€™t get it. Am I missing something?

Generally I think itā€™s more of a personality trait, and itā€™s something you definitely look for during college evaluation. Youā€™ll see ā€œpanics at the catch pointā€ on a lot of scouting reports.

Now thatā€™s not to say they canā€™t improve - and honestly I didnā€™t think it was that much of an issue for Arnold in college, though it did show up from time to time - but they need to calm down first. Usually/hopefully that comes from experience, but not always. Iā€™m sure everyone remembers Chris Houston. He was sticky as glue but just couldnā€™t stop freaking out when the ball was in the air. Guy never got his head around.

LOL I looked at the title and was like this has to be ESPNBABYā€¦

Arnold is not a bust. He is learning and getting better. He dropped in as a rookie and is playing man corner in the NFL and has done average. I get we want a plus player and he has shown clear plus player ability but has also lacked consistency which is pretty common for rookies.

The problem we may have is our expectations. Branch has basically ruined any defensive back coming on tis team and being allowed to develop because BB is such a freak. And BTW BB also has issues with being handsy and plenty of Def Holding calls. But he makes plays.

I am not 100% sold on the ā€œPI missed callā€, I need to see it again but it seemed like the WR got tangled in his own feet.

This is the same thought I had when Bryant Westbrook was playing for lions ,nowhere near ball or interfere too early.if obvious interference was called on third down then game over . Itā€™s not coaching ,itā€™s players responsibility

In M2M the technique that is taught is to focus on the receiver first and foremost. You have to wait until last moment to look for the ball or you can lose phase with the receiver. DBā€™s can use the hand near receiver to stay in phase by making contact and feeling where receiver is while looking.
DBā€™s should not turn to look for the ball if they are not in phase wit the receiver. They should focus on recovery and try to attack the catch point (hands / arms) of receiver to break up the pass.
Looking for the ball should be done when the receiver turns to look or when hands come out.
Good NFL receivers will present ā€œlate handsā€ where they wait until the last second to reach for the ball.
Good NFL QBā€™s will throw the ball before the receiver looks to give DB less time to get there head around.
Most of the ā€œget your head aroundā€ timing of CBā€™s is experience and instinct.
We do drills but it is hard to replicate live game experience.
The most important thing is to achieve and maintain phase with the receiver. If the DB is running with the receiver timing the look is not difficult.
Most DBā€™s that have head turn timing issues is because they are rarely in phase and struggling to recover and canā€™t afford to look back.

Arnold may be the best Rookie CB the Lions have ever had since Ray Crockett. (Brian Branch is DB/safety hybrid, not included) Your comparison to Fair and Westbrook is total garbage.
Arnold has already made more great break ups then those two ever made in their sorry careers combined. Try again Baby, this was a very weak take,

Tbf is a pretty tough position for a rookie. He is learning on the job as he is the 2nd best CB we have. Iots of potential

It looked like Arnold got smoked to me and was running as fast as he could to catch up. You can only really turn your head when youā€™re not getting burnt like that.

He is so locked in on staying in phase that he doesnā€™t have awareness of the ball location. Iā€™m confident this will come in time. Hopefully late this year.

Everyone is asking the wrong question.
I donā€™t remember which of our LBā€™s was right there in front of the play, but, the right question is, ā€˜why wasnā€™t that an interceptionā€™?
