However, Williams’ holiday debut could have ended prematurely in the third quarter. On second-and-5 at the 10:46 mark, Williams took a brutal hit from Lions linebacker Jack Campbell. The tackle came during a nine-yard scramble by Williams, who tried to run out of bounds to avoid a hit.
However, Campbell made a tackle that connected with Williams’ left knee. He remained down for a few minutes before getting back up and jogging to the line of scrimmage. Although he claimed to be okay, Williams noted that he did not appreciate Campbell’s tackle.
I still say it’s not even low. Jack’s responding to the ball-carrier in the field of play. If he would have done anything different I would be incredibly disappointed.
Sometimes these questionable hits often are a bit low. But in this case it’s actually a hip / thigh shot so there’s not much to beef about here.
It simply looks worse than it is because of the way CW for some stupid reason decided to stop instead of keep running out of bounds or actually turn and make contact with Campbell. He couldn’t decide what he wanted to do. If you’re on the field you are fair game to be tackled.
I will also say that seeing JC come running across the field like a heat seeking missle while turning to positioning himself with his head still up is why they drafted the dude.
What’s more alarming though is the amount of time CW has on this play and going forward mobile QBs are going to exploit that so we better get healthier sooner than later
He obviously thought he could fake out Campbell and get extra yards like he did in college. It doesn’t work like that in the pros, kid. Even if he had gotten Campbell to whiff there were 350 lbs of defensive tackle coming to flatten him. Stop whining and play smarter.
It worked for Mahomes against San Francisco. Good on Campbell for not falling for it (unless he was just a scared deer in the headlights, which is probably a worse look for him).
100%. That is why I don’t want to hear any bitching about this. None. The ONLY reason he would do such a foolish thing is to use the fact he is a QB to make the defender believe he was just going to run out of bounds. It was bush from the start. And instead of talking about whether it was legal people should be talking about why you should NEVER do this as a QB.
Well he’s just a runner at that point and not viewed as a QB so Jack is free to light him up…even at the knees, which this was not.
Also I think that until Caleb learns to just go out of bounds he may take alot of hits like this on the sidelines…he actually does a good job of playing right to the line so if he wants to dipsy-do and do shit right till the last moment he’s gonna get hit like this and probably a few just past the line too
When I’ve watched Williams he has been very quick to go down early to avoid hits. This being on the sideline he was probably hoping for a shove so he could do one of his patented sideline dives. You don’t always get what you want… I think the Stones told me that.
