You know the game…you love the game…you love the Schadenfreude/Gallows Humor/Self-deprecating coping mechanism.
Mostly.
1991 was 30 years ago. This was the last time the Lions won a playoff game. Also, this is the last time Weasel spent more than 3 hours in one stretch with his ex-wife. So much Joy and Happiness that year…but I digress.
So, it’s been 30 years. 2021. If you were to wind the clock back 30 years from that 1991 last playoff win, what would a person attending that game be closer to in time than we are to that game?
Here, I’ll start.
John Kennedy having a full head of hair.
What, too harsh to start? Fine, snowflakes…
-Having to explain what a microwave oven was.
-Space Flight hadn’t happened yet (manned at least…that poor Soviet dog on the other paw).
-Herbert Hoover breathing.
-Michael Jordan not breathing.
The last Civil War veteran still breathing (disputed claim of a powder monkey).
No disrespect to the game, but I’m going on a tangent. This brought back a memory, and I am curious if it stuck with other Lion’s fans as much as it did with me… Surprisingly, I am actually a fan of the song and listen to it occasionally to remind myself of how proud I felt that day… long… long… long ago. Anyway, what’s the song they played on the pregame against the Skins during CBS’ montage of the Lion’s?
Kids practicing safety measures against a nuclear attack. By kneeling with your head against the hallway lockers, holding an American history book over your head.
I was breathing in both 61 and 91.
A little surprised to still be breathing in 21.
Cell phones, laptops, computer towers being obsolete.
We had a black and white tv until I was 17.
The person attending the 1991 Lions NFL playoff game vs the Cowboys would be closer in time to Martin Luther King’s “I have a dream speech” than today.
He’d also be closer in time to:
The debut of the Rolling Stones
The death of Marilyn Monroe
The Cuban Missile Crisis
The first use of ZIPCODES. Zip, in case you are wondering, is short for Zone Improvement Plan, and a marketing plan was launched by the government to get people to start using them with a song “The Swinging Six”. Sounds like it belongs in a middle of the road porno, if you ask me. But nobody did so never mind.
Spiderman making his first appearance in a comic book
The top rated TV being The Beverly Hillbillies.
The game Twister first being introduced.
And finally…the Blue Streak at Cedar Point debut is closer in time to our last playoff win than the present day.
More specifically, the playoff win was Jan. 5, 1992. (I didn’t know that off the top of my head – although I attended it. I had to look it up.)
So it’s been about 29.33 years.
So something that happened less than that back from January 1992.
A world where the Surgeon General didn’t warn Americans about the health dangers of smoking existed closer in time to the Lions’ last playoff win than we are now.
Closer in time to when there weren’t “playoff” games… Closer in time to when the American Football League existed… Closer in time to a world without a Super Bowl… and only 3 years short of the Bobby “phucking” Layne curse!!
