Closer in Time Game: Last Playoff Win Edition

You know the game…you love the game…you love the Schadenfreude/Gallows Humor/Self-deprecating coping mechanism.

Mostly.

1991 was 30 years ago. This was the last time the Lions won a playoff game. Also, this is the last time Weasel spent more than 3 hours in one stretch with his ex-wife. So much Joy and Happiness that year…but I digress.

So, it’s been 30 years. 2021. If you were to wind the clock back 30 years from that 1991 last playoff win, what would a person attending that game be closer to in time than we are to that game?

Here, I’ll start.

John Kennedy having a full head of hair.

What, too harsh to start? Fine, snowflakes…

-Having to explain what a microwave oven was.

-Space Flight hadn’t happened yet (manned at least…that poor Soviet dog on the other paw).

-Herbert Hoover breathing.

-Michael Jordan not breathing.

The last Civil War veteran still breathing (disputed claim of a powder monkey).

Yikes. Your turn.

No disrespect to the game, but I’m going on a tangent. This brought back a memory, and I am curious if it stuck with other Lion’s fans as much as it did with me… Surprisingly, I am actually a fan of the song and listen to it occasionally to remind myself of how proud I felt that day… long… long… long ago. Anyway, what’s the song they played on the pregame against the Skins during CBS’ montage of the Lion’s?

I’ll play:

Hair metal being considered a viable form of music (sorry not sorry)

A potential Beatles reunion

The Beatles/British Invasion

Disco

Star Wars and the original Indiana Jones movies

Apple IIGS

Oregon trail

Hairspray ( no seriously, look at pictures of people from the 80s what the hell… talk about attack of the aerosol)

Vincent price doing the voice over for Thriller

Vincent price films

Ok that’s enough for now, I think I played the game correctly. It’s late and my brain went on a weird tangent

Otherwise great man, if not for that one flaw…

Remember seeing one for the first time - grandma had one. It was bigger than the engine in my Silverado and twice as heavy.

Natty was in his freshman year of college, still had a full head of hair (didn’t know any better at the time)…and was also breathing.

I’d respond but I’ve already died of dysentery.

You were closer to Black and White television programming during our last playoff win than you were to us today.

You were closer to the beehive hairdo being in style than to hair being dyed in blues, greens, pinks and chartreuse being in style.

Kids practicing safety measures against a nuclear attack. By kneeling with your head against the hallway lockers, holding an American history book over your head.

That it’ll do it…

I was breathing in both 61 and 91.
A little surprised to still be breathing in 21.
Cell phones, laptops, computer towers being obsolete.
We had a black and white tv until I was 17.

The person attending the 1991 Lions NFL playoff game vs the Cowboys would be closer in time to Martin Luther King’s “I have a dream speech” than today.

He’d also be closer in time to:

The debut of the Rolling Stones

The death of Marilyn Monroe

The Cuban Missile Crisis

The first use of ZIPCODES. Zip, in case you are wondering, is short for Zone Improvement Plan, and a marketing plan was launched by the government to get people to start using them with a song “The Swinging Six”. Sounds like it belongs in a middle of the road porno, if you ask me. But nobody did so never mind.

Spiderman making his first appearance in a comic book

The top rated TV being The Beverly Hillbillies.

The game Twister first being introduced.

And finally…the Blue Streak at Cedar Point debut is closer in time to our last playoff win than the present day.

More specifically, the playoff win was Jan. 5, 1992. (I didn’t know that off the top of my head – although I attended it. I had to look it up.)

So it’s been about 29.33 years.

So something that happened less than that back from January 1992.

A world where the Surgeon General didn’t warn Americans about the health dangers of smoking existed closer in time to the Lions’ last playoff win than we are now.

A world where angioplasty, the surgery, had never been done is closer in time to the Lions’ last playoff win than we are now. Almost a million of those are now performed each year, just in the U.S.

The Weather Underground just referred to subway humidity

You would be closer in time to remembering when the Lions were a real organization and not just the butt end of jokes.

Closer in time to when there weren’t “playoff” games… Closer in time to when the American Football League existed… Closer in time to a world without a Super Bowl… and only 3 years short of the Bobby “phucking” Layne curse!!

They were closer to the time when it was trendy for men to wear short shorts and crop tops

I think the closest I came to dying was on the Blue Streak. Bar didn’t lock in, was literally 2 feet off the seat, holding on, looking like Superman…

It was awesome.
