Outside of that team, how great was Austin’s other defenses? How long did he last in Cincy as their Defensive Coordinator? Where is he the defensive coordinator now? It is disingenuous to suggest he was anything greater then he really was.

At least Austin was able to build a defense with the players he was given. MP apparently needs players that fit a very distinctive mold or he can’t put a decent defense together.

MP had a top 10 defense last year. There have been multiple times where people have said that MP provided the blueprint for beating elite offenses (chiefs and Rams). Multiple credible individuals in the media (phil simms, chris simms, Kurt Warner) have talked about his defense and how intrical it is. Okware had a career last year. Davis, by his standards, had a career year, Hand was a 4th round draft pick and graded out as the best rookie dt since SUH and Donald. Tracey Walker in limited snaps last year playing behind Quinn graded out extremely well as a rookie. But ya…MP sucks…
His current defense is on pace to be worse than any in the last 9 years from any team.
His “blueprint” to stop the Chiefs gave up 27 points and 439 yards without their best skill player. It was a ridiculous narrative if looked at past the surface.
If the Chiefs did what they did vs Lions for 16 games they would have the 2nd best offense in the NFL and only be 5 yards per game from 1st. Some blueprint.
Oh trust me - I know the Pro Bowl is a popularity contest. But we don’t have any players playing at a level worthy of pro-bowl consideration on the defensive side of the ball. I agree with you that on paper the defense looks better than the 2015 team but statistically and by the eye test they are worse. And ultimately that is on Quinn. His first year he has a coach and team that over perform and make the playoffs. He does little to improve the roster year 1 but fires the coach for not improving on a 9-7 season and brings in an unproven coach that needs his own type of player. And so far they have spent ridiculous dollars on free agents that are not living up to their contracts and have little to show in terms of impact players from the draft. Meanwhile his “genius” defensive coach is putting one if not the worst defense in the history of the organization on the field each week. The defense is an epic failure to this point. I don’t care if on paper they are better. On the field they are worse in every way. They are undisciplined, inconsistent, overpowered and play uninspired - That is because Quinn thought he was smarter than everyone else and would hire the next great coach. Meanwhile McVay, Pederson, Shanahan, Lafleur etc. etc. are turning their teams around in 1 season while we are talking about it might take another year (or two) to get this right while Quinn is going on year 5 next year. If they give him another year or two so be it. But hopefully he learns that just coming from the Patriots and hiring everyone he can from the Patriots is not enough to build a successful franchise.
I actually do think he developed the defensive game plans that other teams used effectively last year. That is why I am so frustrated. He seems completely married to “his” system of rushing 3 regardless of what the results are instead of shifting scheme some to take better advantage of his healthier players. I don’t see any imagination in game planning this year. Just “line up, shut up and do your job” and to hell with the results. No wonder the players are grumbling. He is supposed to be putting them in the best situations to succeed. I don’t care if you handpicked your secondary from the hall of fame - we will continue to make pedestrian QB’s look like pro-bowlers playing the way we are. I would rather go down in flames trying something different, ANYTHING different than just trotting out the same failed plans and then parroting that we just need to coach up better and we will be ok.

That was a weird game. It seemed like the Lions could never catch up once the Vikes pulled ahead and that they had about a zero percent chance of stopping the Vikings from scoring.

Everything you said doesn’t negate last year and what transpired and everything you said speaks to something must be going…injuries, player regression, perhaps even coaching. You are contesting that it is largely if not entirely coaching…and i don’t think that is accurate…
