Darius Slay Released and can be signed without impacting Free Agent Comp Formula

He is pretty much a :lock: to come back to Detroit IMO. He wants to be here and the Lions have the need. He has had a really great career and should play another season here.

I’m not counting on rakestraw until I see it. Hope he works out but his build and the way he hits makes me wonder how healthy he will be at the NFL level.

FWIW, I like Slay. Think it’d be cool for him to come back - he deserved better than Patricia.

All that said, I’d rather bring in Kendall Fuller. :man_shrugging:

I would say 5 or 6. Dude shouldn’t see the field again

I want a CB and a WR in every draft, period. I actually think this is a decent draft for both and if we get Slay that puts CB into a solid day 3 discussion. I also think Fuller should get a look and that we might want to go down that road. Great development though.

Fuller would be my pick but only if it doesn’t cost us an arm and leg.
What do you think he is going to get vs Slay?

Just based on what Fuller’s last contract was - 7.5m APY, I can’t imagine it’s going to be more than that. 6-7m? No idea what Slay is going to want. He hasn’t been under 12m APY since 2016 and his last extension/renegotiation was 13m APY in 2023.

Personally, I think Fuller is the better fit, is younger, and will cost less. I’m not interested in paying a 34year old CB anything north of 10m+ a year, regardless of the former connection here.

Bring him home, Brad.

I must admit I am biased toward Slay.
He is a great guy, has come to a number of my camps when here and was very supportive of helping my players improve and get scholarships.
I still think he a better option than Fuller.
Yes, Fuller is younger but Slay had a better 2024 season (PFF and other metrics) and Fuller is a much bigger injury risk.
Fuller only played 11 games and couldn’t finish the season because of knee and multiple concussions.
Multiple concussions on a 30 yr old CB is not a good sign for the future.
Fuller was not a cap cut as he was owed only a little over $2M in cash for 2025.
Likely for injury and Dolphins thought they could do better.
Slay released because he had a $16.1M option due this season.
Slay ended the season healthy and the starting CB on the Super Bowl Champions.
Slay wants to be a Lion and is a natural M2M CB that learned to play zone.
Slay will cost more because he is better but not likely to be over $10M as it is understood that he is taking a step back.
Slay is a great lock room presence and good influence with teammates.
Holmes may not sign Slay, but I would hope it would be Slay over Fuller.

Seeing as Carlton Davis is the only corner I could possibly rank in the top 32 in the league since Dan/Brad era started. I mean anything sounds pretty good.

Bring back Will Harris!
