DetNews: Giovanni Manu 'up and down,' Lions unsure of Taylor Decker's immediate availability

I will always err on the side of keeping your MVP-level QB from taking huge shots. Manu needs to figure it out ASAP or move over for Skipper, imo. Jared is far too valuable for him to get injured because of a skill issue or mental lapse. Hearing Manu post-game made me cringe. Laughing about how it was so easy to hear because it was like a home game for the Lions but yet “I missed the kill”. Get it together kid. Nothing personal, but I care more about Goff’s health than your feelings.

I swear I heard him trying to get the kill right before the snap because he didnt get it. I am not sure if it was a “didnt hear it” or it didnt register because this was his 1ST START. Hell Ratledge and Mahogany both missed a lot of calls that destroyed our offense week 1.

Manu needs to show more progress and get to the point of serviceable backup rather quickly. With that said he had a few plus reps in the run game and honestly with a little protection in the pass game he may not be too much of a hindrance if we need him for another game or two.

These are my favorite Risdon articles. He’s detailed and his prose leans into simplicity which I appreciate. When the football hipsters society does these pieces they often imbed themselves in jargon likely as a way to buttress their credentials as they are often nerds that didn’t play ball. Jeff doesn’t fall for the trap. Kudos to him for that.

in general it seems he saw about what I saw although in MUCH greater detail.

Yeah that’s why I posted it. He had some really good plays and some really bad plays, which was to be expected. Hell on the pre-game Decker’s-out thread, that’s exactly what I predicted he would do. You don’t go up against the NFL’s sack leader from a year ago without getting beat. He made a lot of really good tackles look bad last year. What mattered was 1) we won, 2) he got reps, and 3) Goff didn’t get hurt. It was a win all the way around.

The football hipsters are dying over what’s happening to Geno. It’s actually pretty interesting to watch.

Watch. Steven Ruiz will keep him in his QB top ten.

Surely not

The real question is the development of manu getting real game reps worth putting Goff at higher risk. He took some big blindside hits I’d rather not see him take.

Aren’t you the same guy that said Jamo was high as a kite last week and compared him to Theo Fleury smoking crack with homeless people. Lol you sure are genius and know everything

Was probably just your step brother posting again.

As Risdon mentioned, it’s a tricky balancing act. Especially since we more or less played him like we would have Decker. But he does need reps or he absolutely won’t improve, and games we’re expected to win easily is a great time to play him. But yeah, Goff has to stay healthy. That’s why I say Cincy went so perfectly. He got reps, we won, and Goff, thankfully, didn’t get hurt. But it is a risk.

10 wins, 19 losses per Risdon.

That’s rough.

Manu didn’t play as well as I thought he did.

I don’t know. If you listen to the haters, they expected zero wins. And probably still contend that’s just what he did. The fact that he CAN win is evidence that he has a future, now he just has to become more consistent. And that takes reps.

Don’t underestimate Stevie’s cognitive dissonance.

He played 62 snaps i believe it was and only 29 were point worthy according to Risdon. His own review of it says he had some good plays and some really bad ones. I dont see how it is much different than the majority saw on the initial watch?

Personally I don’t think the plays where he gets beat are the issue for Dan. It’s the MAs. I think we understand that he’s a work in progress and he’s going to get beat physically bc of a technique and reps gap. But we need him to catch audibles. We need him to be where he is supposed to be. Ultimately that’s the stuff that gets him yanked this week if that’s what happens. That and simply JG risk aversion.

The chiefs also have good but not great defensive ends. If Manu can decently handle Hendrickson he can handle anyone on KC with help.

This “let him get game reps to get better” is ridiculous for an NFL regular season game at LT.

It is not how Dan and the Lions operate.

Manu played because there was no better option.

Skipper is back, and if he is better he will start.

You can’t have a LT learning on the job when he is protecting the Blind side of your irreplaceable Franchise QB.

Dan knows that and is why he quickly mentioned his other options immediately after the game.

It is literally what happens for every rookie ever. But…

This can be true as well.

But no player in NFL history will reach his ceiling without game reps.

This is correct.

But those reps have to be earned with superior play in practice.

You don’t start an inferior player (especially at LT) to get reps.

The best player plays.

Dan & Goff know it wasn’t good, and I’d be surprised if he started Sunday.

Well, they were. Superior to our other options.
