Detroit Lions Defense Is Better Without Aaron Glenn

OK , please tell me who we added this year over last year
DJ Reed? he replace CDIII
T Williams, who is a rookie?

We lost Iffy as Safety depth

Saying “Definitely more talented” than last years defense is a stretch. Now if you want to talk injuries in the last half of last year, than so be it.
But Shep did a great job with 2 3rd string CB’s and a pair of safeties that only had 5 games started combined and 3 years of NFL experience combined.

Best defensive showing we have seen in years from this team

Ben chose the Bears because he knew they had a lot of talent on offense, their “franchise” QB, and some good pieces on defense. Glenn didn’t have that luxury–a choice between the Jets and the Saints–both bad teams without QBs.

I’m a little upset by this. This is FALSE!

I LOVE AG and he brought a brand of defense i was begging for this team to have for decades. He had nothing. Last season he didn’t have Hutch and was great anyway. He was praised. Especially for that Vikings game.

He was voted number 1 coordinator by players in the entire league.

Players loved him.

Players such as Kerby and Branch credit him for their development.

Shepp was a studen of AG. Groomed to become DC. That scheme that Shepp is running? Thats the same sceheme AG ran. Same thing.

Can Shepp be better? Maybe. The student can always become the master. That’s great, but not going to go there yet and not going to discredit AG at all.

From what I understand the Jets players are all standing behind him. He’s not losing the team. And Fields is easily the worst QB in th league. He finally got benched.

AG needs time and I hope he gets it.

FYI, most fans wehere calling for DC and BH’s head their first season.

I’m sorry you think you did. And what you, “just think”, is that AG is shit and will never coach again. You never made this about the Lions simply having a better coach. But way to, as we say, move the goal posts.

it's okay pat GIF by HULU

I’ll give you that, but I’d still contend that Glenn under performed with the talent he had all years with the Lions.

We had a hell of a defensive showing last year on Primetime against GB with a scrub D and the same against the Vikings to end the year.

I just want the defense to stay consistent, they are certainly on the right track.

No it definitely is more talented. Holmes’ draft picks have another year under their belt.

  • Hutch is better this year than last

Branch is better this year than last

Kerby is better this year than last

Arnold is better this year than last

Campbell is better this year than last.

  • Williams is better than the 3rd/4th DT from last year, even as a rookie.

Sorry, but it’s just common sense.

One factor for AG is the NY Media and fans. 5x the number and nastiness of toxic shitheads.

Different deal than going 0-10-1 to start here. With Goff.

AG has Woody behind him

and will survive to next year. Fields wasn’t his guy. Whoever they draft will be. Tanner better watch his ass though.

I think one of the keys to the Lions turnaround was that Sheila and Brad were onboard with cutting and eating the contracts of players that did not fit into the vision of the team going forward. The first year and a half of the new Lions era were tough, but I don’t think we would be in the position we’re in now without that purge. The Lions brought in a new culture, the Jets just got a new head coach.

I agree AG never had his talented players all healthy and playing together at the same time. Maybe for a few games at the beginning of last year and they were the best defense in the NFL.

The one problem I always had with AG was not accounting for QBs running for 1st downs. Shep so far has fixed that problem by using a spy or an underneath zone LB that is waiting for any QB that decides to make a run for it. Last night I don’t even remember Baker attempting to run for a 1st down.

I think an important aspect to our success this year against running QB’s is having Cunningham running the scout team. Last season it was HH trying to simulate that skill set, and he clearly did not have a head for the game, so our scout team didn’t provide the same quality of prep last year.

Nope not statistically, Hutch’s first 5 games he was on a tear last year

They are playing the same, same talent they had last year

This one is funny, all the posts have been how Arnold had regressed from last year. He definitely was not playing better. Talent is still there but same talent

Campbell is playing better, I will give you this one.

Sorry , but common sense, quite overblowing how AG had NO talent to work with.
Shep is going to show us how a real DC game plans and can make adjustments in coverages.
We have already seen it in the Ravens and TB game.

Shep in 7 games is >>> AG in his 3 years

I would say both can be true - AG was a good coach but Shep is maybe even a better replacement.

No one said AG had no talent to work with. They said these young players are still developing and growing.
Typically year 3 of an NFL career is when players really blossom into what they’re going to be. Hutch was just at the start of his year 3 season last year when he got hurt, at which point we had one of the best D’s in the league. Branch is just starting his year 3 now. Campbell too. If you don’t understand this, or how injuries impacted AG’s defensive unit, there is no point arguing. You clearly just did not like AG and no amount of facts is going to change your mind.

I should be clearly on record as saying I thought the MCDC was a bad hire. 100% because when you completely suck you need to over pay and bring in a proven winner. They should have paid whatever it took to bring in Payton.

Now it has worked out very well but the Lions hired a guy with little experience taking a huge risk.

I do not see the same issue with either the AG hire for the Jets. Or the Lions hiring of Shep. I would suggest that Shep is great at Detroit but I am not confident he could walk into another room and be nearly as successful. He took over a group of guys who he knew and who knew him and tweaked an existing defense he helped build over 3 years.

It is a funny business building coaching staffs, front offices, and rosters. When it is right it is so right and when it goes wrong well you get the Raiders or the Jets or the Lions for 50 years.

We have an elite HC.

This is common factor between AG and Shep.

Our HC will elevate and does with coaches as much if not more than with players

Imho it’s about MCDC more than the coordinator .

Yea but that’s been the knock on AG - or at least my knock. It’s always “when AG has tons of talent and a perfect situation he’s good at his job.” That’s less impressive to me than others on here. We saw Ben Johnson’s unit face some injuries and perform, we’ve seen Shep’s defense perform a miracle while pulling guys out of the stands… but with AG there’s always a sliding scale and excuses. He’s a fine coach, I’m not trashing him, but I do think he’s overrated and Im happy we’ve upgraded.
