Detroit Lions ‘ecstatic’ for Tom Kennedy, plan to keep him as kick returner

That is just the “cap” number… not the actual salary. He is in the final year of a backloaded contract… so that is how the accounting worked out. He has made $4 million per year (cash paid) over the past 3 years.

When they re-signed him….

he had averaged almost 45 catches and 550 yards per year for the previous 3 seasons… and was an All-Pro punt returner.

And in 2025 it’s an overpay IMO… The past is the past, he’s overpaid and overused this season. I thought they learned he wasn’t a #3 last season before acquiring Tim Patrick… He’s a great dude and teammate, just not a super productive player at this point relative to his cap number

Lions would have saved only $1.86 million if they cut him.

The rest was money already paid or guaranteed.

Then they would have had to keep a rookie or sign a vet….

and the actual cap savings would have been less than $1 million…

for 2025.

That’s almost the whole salary of Tim Patrick :man_shrugging: I still think that’s one of the biggest missteps this offseason… He was more productive and cheaper… Kennedy/Lovett could play the Leaf role

Raymond has really fallen by the wayside in the offense with the emergence of TeSlaa and Gibbs’s exciting pass catching skills (we were promised more of that last year).
But we better not sleep on his kick return ability. Kennedy should be first choice now that we’ve seen him, but Leaf is good, too.

Tim Patrick signed a $2.5 million deal….

a bit north of the $1 million mark.

Is he? He’s 17th in the league

Well, his fiance (I think) would love another game ball and kiss. Maybe in crunch time he can make that happen.

Then why hasn’t Lovett gotten any snaps since lif went down.. why did we have to promote Kennedy for the practice squad to jump Lovett on the depth chart?

I honestly think Raymond is nearing the end here in DET. Having Kennedy take more snaps will give us a true feel if he can be the starter next year.

This. Leaf was primary our PR not our KR. And guy ist still good but some guys here have really bad signs of recency bias.

He’s likely higher on the depth chart than Lovett… But no one is claiming Tom Kennedy when he’s released, some would put in a claim for a rookie who’s shown production in college, so he’s got to stay on the active roster.

Recency bias? He’s been very average this year at his best trait, returning punts and he’s a below average #3 WR. Why would I care what he did last season or earlier?

Wonder if Kalif Raymond reads The Den? 15 yard punt return
