Detroit Lions Team Needs 2019

If they can’t afford Ingram, the Saints will offer Zenner a job and he’ll be their #2 and we’ll wonder where that came from when they see him catch passes from Brees and get extra yards with his vision after the catch.

All that, after knowing Zenners numbers are better than Ingram’s.
Damn the numbers, I have an opinion!

If you ask 500 NFL front office people who they would rather have Mark Ingram or Zac Zenner, 500 of them will say Mark Ingram. Your stats mean nothing. In fact here they are
Career stats
Ingram 1321 attempts 4.5 avg.
Zenner 148 attempts 3.9 avg

Last year
Ingram 138 attempts 4.7
Zenner 55 attempts 4.8

Actually, using the most recent stats is most relevant. However, if you want to use historical data… Ingram’s first 150 carries were 3.9 avg.

Context matters, also. Must have been nice to play for the Saints with their elite QB and pass game taking the attention off the run game…

Doesn’t matter anyway. Zenner will outperform his contract next year. Ingram won’t. Bet?

Besides, Ingram is a moot point. He is 29 and this is his last shot at a big deal. He’ll also want to be the feature back and not splitting time, which he will certainly have to do with KJ.

Leave it to you to misrepresent facts to fit your narrative. It took Zenner 4 years to get his 150. Ingram had his 28 carries into his second season, while Brees was throwing for 5000 yds. There is no world Zac Zenner even enters the room to sniff Mark Ingram’s numbers. Make up what you want.

I’m not misrepresenting facts. I resent this accusation.

I think nobody is disputing that Ingram was given more opportunities than Zenner has.

You also did not address the point about the newest stats being the most relevant.

So let’s compare apples to apples.

Year 2 for both players.

Ingram (2nd yr, 2012)

5 GS
156 carries for 602 yards (3.9ypc)
5 TD
6 rec for 29yds

Zenner (2nd year, 2016)
4 GS
88 carries, 334 (3.8ypc)
4 TD
18 catches, 196 yds

Ok, so explain to me why these numbers are unfair to compare?

Maybe you might want to consider the teams these guys played on? One had a solid OC. One had Jim Bob Cooter… One had an elite QB…

Dude, you’re making me “angry”.
I’m too old for circle jerks. Either football is a team game for everyone on the team, or for nobody on the team. You can’t have it both ways in the same paragraph.

Offensive needs in order in my opinion.

  1. WR - there’s rumors floating that DET is shopping MJ. If true that means we have one viable WR on the team in Galladay. That suggests the Lions need to find at least two quality options at WR. A Slot WR to fill Tates roll and an outside WR with enough speed to stretch the field. Ideally it would be nice to get a WR who is fast and physical so that he can also be a red zone threat. This brings me to my bold prediction that the Lions could draft D. K. Metcalf at 8th.

  2. TE - The Lions desperately need a big receiving target to help on 3rd downs and in the red zone. The 2018 Lions lacked this element and the results were a poor red zone offense. Could the Lions draft a WR and TE In rounds 1 and 2? I wouldn’t be shocked if they did.

  3. OL - Decker was a disappointment last year. He clearly regressed from his rookie year. Either he improves or the Lions should consider drafting his replacement. In which case I’d move Decker inside to OG. If the Lions feel last year was just a down year for him than they should be looking to get a quality OG. Rumor is that Lang and DET are in talks to restructure Lang’s contract and that Lang is interested in doing so. He wants to return for another year. If so this would allow DET to give Decker one more year at LT. DET then wouldn’t be forced into drafting an oL early. They could then look to FA or the latter part of the draft for Quality depth. Quinn has stated that this years OL class has some quality depth in it. I get the feeling he’s drafting an OL at some point.

  4. RB - I assume ZZ is back and that Blount is gone. I’m even expecting the Lions to part ways with Riddick. This should open the door for the Lions to get a RB in FA or the draft. I’d like to see us add a RB that has the ability to go the distance. I feel that the lack of having one makes it easier for opposing defenses to cheat the box.

Defensive needs in order

  1. DE - I’m not sure that Matt P. And BQ think the need at DE is as big as fans do. But it’s obvious that we need to get more pressure on the opposing QB. That could come in a LB, DE or a pass rush specialist. It will be interesting to see how they approach the problem. Don’t count Ziggy out just yet. There’s talks that he could be back. Personally I’m hoping we address this issue in FA.

  2. LBer - The Lions LBer are nothing special. I firmly believe that it takes good LBer play to go deep into the post season. If you look at SB winnners in recent years. You will see that a common element of above average LBer play is needed to win. Which makes LBers as a possibility in FA and the draft.

  3. DB - With The release of G. Quin the Lions opened a whole in their secondary. We maybe have his replacement already on the roster. My guess is we will add another S to the mix and then let them all compete for the starting gig. Lawson is under contract through this season so
I’m expecting him back. I also expect the Lions to keep Tabor at CB (per Bob Quinn’s comments) he’s on the roster bubble and the Lions will need to add a least one CB. I’d like to see us get a replacement for Lawson and then move Lawson to the slot CB spot where I think he will be more valuable.

Honestly I think the Lions need as much talent on offense as they do defense.

The Angry Driver nick actually refers to a golf club I tried once. It hit angry…

It depends. All I’m saying is that it’s not unreasonable to compare the numbers of 2 RBs. I’m fine to account for the differences in teams. I’m saying Ingram had advantages on his team that Zenner didn’t.

Another one I thought of. Who had to get winded playing special teams? Zenner 137 special teams snaps, Ingram 36. Zenner 118 offense snaps. Ingram 266. Is it because the coaches in N.O. thought Ingram was better? Uh, yeah. Morons here thought Washington was a better choice than Zenner (see # of carries). Seems pretty obvious to me that he wasn’t, but they valued speed more than vision, I guess…

It’s speculation, to be sure, but you put Ingram on the Lions and he’s not getting the numbers he got in N.O. There is far more respect for Brees’ arm (and brain) than Stafford. (advantage Ingram) And Cooter was a fraud since he was elevated to OC. (advantage Ingram).

We want them to cheat the box. Then they get burned by Stafford’s arm (so long as he can recognize a true cheat and not a feint)

Homerun hitters aren’t cheap. I’m happy we run the ball with more power and more often. Defenses tire when you hit them often, as opposed to playing pass pro 80% of the time.
