Andy Dirks up next on MLB Siriusxm.
Tigers preview is today and airs later tonight and on demand if you have SiriusXm

Dirks summary…hopefully I’m close.

Excitement with Tigers as it should be the loss to the Seattle team had to leave a sour taste, so close, after the way the season ended, how does the team take the season as a whole. Great to start, struggled at the end.

Dirks: They had flashes as the best team or one of throughout the first half, every season you have highs and lows. As these guys grow and mature they will improve and this camp, unlike prior camps, there is a lot of competition. (FRM is there really?). It does promote depth element, brings pressure to the guys that they have to work to stay in the big leagues. Two years ago they were learning, now they have some experience and swagger based on last two seasons. Then add JV and Framber and it only helps.

Q: Framber/JV lot of depth with the Pitching, yet, I wonder about the defense. Is KM a good SS? What will we see on the left side of the infield from a defensive standpoint.
Dirks: Javy, Mckinstry add in Vierling at 3rd and this is also where the competition comes in to push these guys if you don’t perform there is someone who will come up and take your spot. KM can rake not sure where he ends up and with AJ at the helm he will figure out the defensive side of the ball.
It’s always about finding that balance and Detroit and Hinch, one of the best will figure it out. FRM: so bunch of words but basically tbd other than Javy at ss.

Q; Bpen?
Dirks: Hinch never been a traditional bullpen guy, he will put in the best guy for the situation vs a definite closer. Best thing is Tigers have three experienced closers on the roster and they just need to get there. Dirks brings up Melton and possible six man rotation at times, loves Melton. Loves Holton, pitching should be really solid. Bigger question is offensively, bringing consistency day in day out.

Q: Gleybor on a one year deal, like how they add guys who want to prove themselves…more a comment host really likes this.

Q: Riley Green, what is the next step for him?
Dirks: Continue to grow and mature, people forget how young he is, he can get susceptible to the K at time (here comes comments..lol) when the offense struggled the K’s built up and guys started to struggle adn tried to do to much. Get the ball in play a little more, always a balance, maintain the power and keep the balance. Need to keep the power element as that is important in the playoffs.
Dirks: Keith has talent, he needs consistent reps. At the plate at third.

Q: Dillon Dingler is the best Catcher in baseball right now, defensively and at the plate.
Dirks: His priority is catching and what comes with that is great but does a great job with the pitchers.

Thank you Al Avila

Tweet from former Detroit Tiger executive:

Random 40-man player note #14: Trei Cruz

The moment Cruz makes his Major League debut, the Tigers will be the only club with FIVE players from the 2020 draft the big leagues (Torkelson, Dingler, Workman, Keith already). They’re currently tied for most with the Marlins.

They also lead all clubs with 3 players w/ 2+ career bWAR from

@frm710 how’s that Knuckleballer doing. He was throwing close to a 90 mph knuckleball. I wanna see that dude pitch.

Good timing
From this mornings paper:

Knuckleballer sighting
Among the minor league campers added to the travel squad Tuesday was 28-year-old, Double-A right-hander Kenny Serwa.

“Everybody knows about him,” Hinch said. “He’s got a unique pitch and he’s emerged as a really interesting pitching prospect.”

That unique pitch is a knuckleball. He’s the only pitcher in the Tigers organization who throws one. He made 17 starts for Double-A Erie last year, posting a 3.95 ERA with 50 strikeouts and 41 walks in 82 innings.

“We’re sprinkling in more challenges for him,” Hinch said. “We sent him to the Arizona Fall League (11 runs in 13.2 innings) and now he’s facing older hitters.”

Serwa isn’t a one-pitch guy. He also throws a fastball and slider. Still, it’s tricky in a spring game finding a catcher who has caught his knuckler. Hinch knows something about that. He caught knuckle-baller Tom Candiotti in his big-league debut.

“He continues to get guys out when he throws strikes,” Hinch said. “We are obviously intrigued by the skills he does have. We will keep putting challenges in front of him and see how he responds.”

Thanks. Rooting for the guy. Don’t wanna see the pitch die.

Down 3-0 against Toronto (one measly hit again)

Down 5-2 against Philly.

Have we won a game yet? I’m aware that it doesn’t really matter but I’m curious.

No we haven’t.

Konnor Griffin hits 2 over the Green Monster yesterday.

Not THAT Green Monster, but he is 19, so…

When Ohtani is done grabbing MVPs it’ll be because of this guy.

From Chris McKoskey tweet

AJ Hinch said Troy Melton is dealing with some arm soreness, which is why he hasn’t gotten a start yet. They are giving him some time for the soreness to subside.

Nice return to action for Ty Madden. Threw six different pitches in a 1-2-3 frame against Kyle Schwarber, JT Realmuto, and Bryce Harper. Four whiffs with the cutter 👀
