Didn’t the Jags seem like they were better?

Recently, they made a nice playoff run, but I didn’t realize their record was this bad every other year:

Jaguars’ record by season:
2019: 6-10
2018: 5-11
2017: 10-6
2016: 3-13
2015: 5–11
2014: 3-13
2013: 4-12
2012: 2-14
2011: 5-11

They were a decent team playing in a weak division for one year… Luck missed the whole year, Watson and JJ Watt missed significant time as well and Mariota sucks monkey balls.

Plus an elite defense (which they definitely had in 2016) is far more difficult to keep together than a good offense.

Absolutely, yes. From the pages of “defense wins championships”, it seemed like they were set up for a little bit of a run.

Hmmm. Interesting concept. Has anyone done the legwork to see if this is real? I would guess one (if they had the time and were so inclined… hint… I’m busy today lol) could add up the franchise tag numbers of all the offensive and then defensive positions and see which averages out as the highest overall number. On offense, you have QB, WR and OT that are insanely high paid positions. Defense, you’ve got DE, DT and CB as high paid, but I’d doubt it was as high as the big three on offense. But interesting concept to think through and if there is a consistency, then one would think it would factor into the draft picture.

They tried to see if the anomaly of the Trent Dilfer led Ravens could be a “thing.” Guess not. So back to the reality that if you do not have a franchise QB, you are done, and if you have a franchise QB (psst we do) don’t F around looking for the next GOAT in the 5th round and spend all your resources building around that guy.

The Jags have had a bottom third offense over that time in almost every one of those years, except they had a top 10 in 2017, the only year they were good.

They have no balance. Kind of similar to another team from a midwestern city.

The problem is so much has to go right to have an elite defensive season. The turnovers have to go your way, you have to stay healthy, your schedule really matters. Just look at the difference in Chicago from 2018 to 2019. In 2018 they were the best defense in the league, but then injuries, worse luck, and the schedule caught up to them, and while still a pretty good defense, they were hardly elite.

On offense, yes, you pay the QB a lot but for good reason. GB has had a good offense forever because they’ve been blessed with good QBs. It’s hard to see the Chiefs becoming a worse offense unless Mahomes gets hurt, same with the Ravens and LJ.

When someone posted that, I was just surprised because there is usually gradual improvement or a few seasons of success. The 10-6 record sticks out like a sore thumb.

Just for the sake of comparison:

Jaguars’ vs Lions records by season:
2019: 6-10 3-12-1
2018: 5-11 6-10
2017: 10-6 9-7
2016: 3-13 9-7
2015: 5–11 7-9
2014: 3-13 11-5
2013: 4-12 7-9
2012: 2-14 4-12
2011: 5-11 10-6
