Do we have any shutdown CB's?

we got burt deep last season a number of times through the air, so my question is do we have shutdown CB’s ? I want us to be able to have Corners that can blanket the field and ruin our opponents day.

After the past two seasons I’d settle for 3 good corners that can stay healthy.

Not even for the whole season… Just start 13 out of 17 games each I’d be happy. Corner injury rates are like pitchers in baseball these days. It’s more of when, not if.

Amik is pretty damn good.
Terrion is very sticky. He was a Rookie, we really won’t know just how good he is until year 3.
Rake needs more time on the field. To develop a CB, you are going to have to take some lumps. We just couldn’t develop them both in the same season.

As long as some of those 13 games are in the playoffs I’m ok with that. Vildor playing the majority of another playoff game for us is not something I ever want to see again. Two years is more than enough.

This is a general blanket statement naj, not a direct shot at you.
.

Vildor is exactly who he is supposed to be and does quite well in that service for the Lions. His narrative as a walking scapegoat is completely unnecessary and a cheap, easy out for fans.

Not possible in todays NFL .

Thats hard…but i would say yes.

I wonder if you look back through different rules eras of the nfl, if you’d find that players at the positions put at most disadvantage by the rules also have higher injury rates. My gut tells me they might even if adjusted for the historical injury frequency for their position group.

I don’t think there is a Woodson or Bailey on this team but you may have a Donnie Abraham, Dre’ Bly or even Ronde Barber type!

The refs won’t allow it

I think Davis ranked 23rd out of 226 CB’s last season

Terrion is going to track Slay’s career, I hope.

Terrion was MUCH better as a rookie than Slay. Yep, Arnold struggled early. No doubt. We all saw it. But he got better over the season and it is reasonable to expect that arch to continue.

From an old PFF article:
“As a rookie in 2013, Slay played as a sub-package corner with a few starts and he didn’t fare too well. He allowed 436 receiving yards on just 231 snaps in coverage for the fourth-most yards per coverage snap among cornerbacks that year. But he was asked to be a full-time starter in his second year and showed significant improvement. He played roughly three times as many snaps in coverage, but only allowed another 298 receiving yards. He also made several more plays on the ball (11 combined interceptions and pass defenses) while cutting down on the missed tackles in the run game.”

Arnold will likely be pretty good in 2025. Amik Robertson is a straight dog. You can’t bury what comes from the dirt. Rakestraw is an unknown with huge upside. That ain’t enough though.

I don’t think we should spend huge dollars at CB in 2025. Look for FA values (like Amik) and the draft. I think Arnold, Rakestraw and Amik are a solid and affordable top trio at CB.

cd3 was around a 50% comp and under 80.0 Rating when targeted.
Shut down. No. But probowl level? Pretty close.

Arnold needs to work on his press coverage and his defense on 50/50 balls. But hes very sticky.
His YAC and miss tackle rate are very very low for the NFL let alone for a rookie.

The Lions dont need a shut down corner.
They need a good healthy deep DL.

If you have a pass rush with decent corners. Its hard to complete passes.

You could have the stickest corners in the nfl. If your DL aint getting home it wont matter

Hence why phillys DBs look so good. With 2 aging vets and 2 rookies. Because they have the best DL depth in the NFL

Corner is a darn tough position as a rookie. NFL qb’s can fit the ball into tight windows and refs allow very little contact in the nfl compared to college refs. I’m hopeful Arnold takes a big step forward next year.

True “shutdown corners” are rare beasts.

I hear way more guys referred to as shutdown corners than come even remotely close to that, IMO. How many CBs “take away half the field” or, more realistically, limit even the best receivers to less than 50 yards on a few receptions, 1 on 1, like Deion Sanders or Darrelle Revis did in their primes?

We don’t have any of those, but neither do a large majority of teams.

What we had this past year, when healthy, was a very good set of corners, an elite pair of safeties, and solid depth. I was very happy with that - and will be very happy if Brad can recreate that.

Nice interception by him and then looked like a running back taking it out of the endzone, go figure.
