Do you think the Lions will add Low Round Beans before final cuts?

Could this be the year that the Lions get several 3rd day picks for players that are good backups/part-time starters but aren’t versatile or consistent enough for the Lions final 53?

Off the top of my head, these are guys that can play spot duty but may have been drafted over by Holmes:

DL
Commish
Houston
Betts
Agude

DB
Vildor
Dorsey

RB
Knight
Reynolds

TE
Mitchell
Zylstra

OL
Muti
Mahogany
Skipper

Thinking a team that doesn’t want to risk Waiver would be willing to trade a 6th/7th in order to ensure they get a guy they want.

DL and OL are always in short supply before and even during the season. Pretty sure our 3rd string guys above are better than the backups on several teams. We saw Jacobs get some attention and signed by the Rams. I think they would love to get their hands on Gilmore and Craig Reynolds if they could at a low enough asking price. Mosely will have a market if he doesn’t make it.

Careful… @Jman gets really excited about magic bean threads. Don’t want to give the guy a heart attack.

Yes, I do think trades for a safety/late round pick before cut downs are possible and even likely. I suggested a couple weeks ago that Da Problem maybe someone else’s problem if Lions think his value is at a peak because of his late 2022 performance and problems (so far) of adequately handling duties other than pass rush.

That is not a prediction because injuries are going to happen and who balls out is a crap shoot from my bleacher seat.

The only player on that list who could bring a draft pick imo is Houston… and it would be a sell low situation where the lions wouldnt get much in return. I guess Mahogeny might get a 7th but he is another player who is definitely not being given away for peanuts.

So i doubt we get draft picks for anyone this camp… but i expext a player or 2 to be picked up that we hoped to squeeze on the PS.

Houston would get a return just because he is a young player on a cheap rookie contract that had a season with 8 sacks.
Not many of those out there.
Commish was an established vet that could get a return before the injury.
Maybe a late round pick swap or similar contingent compensation.
None of the other players have proven anything in the NFL or are former early picks with untapped potential.

I wouldn’t trade houston for the 5th or 6th he would return (at best). And we got cominski off waivers. Plus he is coming off a 1 sack season. He isnt an established vet worth much to anyone. Many thought he would be cut just because of his cap number… which is only like 4 mil.

I don’t think Holmes will trade Houston…
But it does sound as if the coaches are getting a little frustrated with his inconsistency.
Commish had a down year based on his 2022 standard but he is still a much better player than when Holmes claimed him off waivers.
He is an established dependable vet that can give you quality snaps across the entire defensive front.
he may not bring much but seem team would swap late round picks to be sure to get him.

Maybe you can get something for the o-line depth. But I am not really seeing it beyond that.

When the final 53 is set, it’s hard for all teams getting their roster down to the final 53, seems like there’s always 2-3 you wish you had room for.
IMO, if a trade is going to be made, it will be with at least 1-2 weeks before the end of camp, the acquiring team needs player X to know their playbook.
IIRC, most preseason trades are bigger name players that have contract squabbles.

I would be very surprised if the Lions trade any players this offseason. With that said it really depends on how injuries affect teams(including the Lions). Right now the Lions look pretty deep at O-line and LB. Though I am not sure that there are players that other teams would be willing to trade for. In some cases the waiver wire would be better.

Revisiting here… Probably low probability.

I’d think other teams are looking at the Lions roster knowing there are some good backup worthy players that will be available soon.

Anyone worth trading for to ensure 1st position over the waiver wire?

No one on that list would get anything more than a 7th a couple years down the line. Houston might be able to get a 6th next year.

Hard to guess who’s going to get cut, but Holmes has been very connected at this time of year, even if we wish he wasn’t (i.e. Trinity Benson).

It would not surprise me if a team in need stepped up and offer us a 4th for Houston. Not saying a team should, but edge rushers are hard to find. Is there a team that is fascinated with his 2022 showing?

I wouldn’t be surprised if we traded one of our “pass catching TE”

The other element to this is, it could be a jerk move to send someone somewhere for a 7th round pick. Obviously there are no guarantees and the player could be picked up on waivers anyway…

If you are a Lion and you get traded for a 7th to a dumpster fire like Washington or Carolina… that would be sucky.

I’m not so sure they are dumpster fire.

But your point is taken

I was thinking that too. We have too many RBs, TEs, LBs, DEs and even OL that have real game experience. Can’t keep them all.

Ugg another reason that we won’t get any picks is this… The second you put a price tag on a player (like a 7th round or higher pick), you signal to other teams that you value that person.

Going to plenty of estate sales, people always pass over the free pile to see what treasures are for sale. Lions are more likely to get back practice squad players they like if they don’t put a price.

Only way you’d trade is if a team comes to the lions and says we want XYZ player for this pick.

Probably what happened with Holmes traded for Benson.
