McDaniels was also with Shanahan in Atlanta and Houston as well. He got his start in the NFL drawing plays for Jon Gruden in Tampa. Not CREATING the plays. Literally DRAWING Gruden’s plays on the computer so they could be issued to the team.
I’m not hung up on getting a big-name guy, but McDaniel seems like the best fit of the big names to me.
If he can’t get another HC gig this cycle (or wishes to take a bit of a break from that grind), it does seem like Detroit would be a good fit, at least with the little info any of us have.
I think the big question is whether or not he’d be willing to leave the offense 80% (or whatever) as-is. I don’t think Dan is willing to do a huge makeover of the offense, and I don’t think that’s the correct answer, either.
If McDaniel is willing to come in, add some creative wrinkles, and take the game planning and playcalling off of Dan’s plate (while doing it better), it could be awesome all around.
If Kubiak (the Seattle OC) gets a HC job this offseason I can see McDaniel going there as they run the Shanahan offense and have explosive playmakers like JSN.
Robert Salah gets a job and I think he would turn the offense over McDaniels.
As someone who’s gambled on the Dolphins they have blown so many 4th and short/goal situations that makes me nervous and when they have played really good defenses even with everyone healthy, they faltered especially in bad weather.
With all that being said we have 9-10 guaranteed dome games and we would be hell to stop.
Honestly I think he and Dan would get on like gangbusters. Dan’s extremely emotionally intelligent, it’s not hard at all to envision them developing a big brother/little brother relationship. Plus I disagree that McDaniel is a beta, he’s just a little weird, he’s small, and he didn’t play football for long. But he’s cool, and I honestly think they could be perfect foils for each other.
The whole alpha-beta thing is complete made-up nonsense. It’s for insecure people to make themselves feel superior to people who make them feel that way. I love weirdos myself. The more the merrier.
At least both us and McDaniel can move now. Kubiak will have to wait until their season ends to accept a job (though I think he can be interviewed now, during their bye? Like Ben was last year? I forget). Either way we have time on our side. Same with Saleh though he could be done as soon as this weekend.
That said McDaniel may wait to see if he gets one of the HC jobs
McDaniel would be a great fit for what Detroit wants to do, but McDaniel has a lot of connections around the league that would make landing him difficult to pull off. Connections is a dirty word if Campbell does it, but it has served the Shanahan staff quite well in their careers.
