Yea, that kind of stuff has been going on since forever.
The ole, “it’s not what you know but who you know”.
Helping to open doors to get your kid a foot in the door has always been kind of expected. Hell, I have done that for friends or kids of friends. But all you were doing is getting them a opportunity to interview and/or get in the door to prove themselves. And you were counting on that person not making you look bad for giving the referral … or you just didn’t do it.
But today things are at a whole different level….more like “hand holding” than “getting your kid a chance” with your connections.
One of my favorites personally was when a guy I knew was the plant manager at a automotive supplier here in West Michigan. He had a kid in college and wanted to help his kid get a internship, so made some calls to get his kid a interview at a sister facility since he wanted to avoid the situation of having his kid working at the plant where he was plant manager.
So the plant manager from the other plant agrees to bring the kid in for a interview and it was all but a done deal that the kid would get the gig unless the kid was a total moron at the interview.
So the kid goes to the interview…kid says it went well…dad calls the other plant manager who says ‘Yea, my people said the interview went fine. Just have some final things to wrap up. We should be good to go”. Dad is happy.
Two days later the other plant manager calls my buddy and says “We have a problem. We can’t give your kid the job. He failed his pre-employment drug screen”

Too true these days. My daughter manages 2 hair salons and a speakeasy style men’s Barber shop. Early on I emphasized to her to not get too close to your employee’s because you’re going to have to fire more than you can imagine. And BTW, you don’t fire anyone, they fire themselves so it’s not personal it’s simply business. Being late, no shows, etc, is all about an entitled workforce. Well the shits starting to hit the fan right now as unemployment is on the rise and a college degree just means you are up to your ass in debt and think the world somehow owes you something. The first question you want to ask any potential hire is what was their job in high school. If they didn’t have one, best to move on.
Dude always seemed a bit off
Maybe it was the part where he sometimes got penalized for tripping defenders by literally rolling around on the ground
Maybe it was the part where he was yelling slurs at a high school marching band
I guess I’m just not that surprised
I remember Raiola having a good rapport with the Bears DL
