Fastest all-time Lions?

Gray had legit Olympic speed. He tied Jessie Owens high school record back in the day.

Nothing was faster than fatty Patty running for the all you can eat buffet

Without looking at others and without knowing actual 40s (just my guess by play speed):

Mel Gray
Jamo
Gibbs
Best

Barely counts as a Lion and a wasted pick but I recall Charles Rogers being a 4.29 guy I thought.

Edit: looked it up. Nope 4.4

Bob Hayes won a couple of gold medals before plying for Dallas. Showing my age a bit there…

I think the 3 fastest are on the team, right now.

Thanks for looking that up!

I don’t think we’ve seen anything close to Jamo’s top MPH. He always looks like he’s just loping, but its fast enough to beat everyone near him.

Oh absolutely. And keep in mind too that those speeds are “ball carriers”

So jamo might have hit 23 mpg to get open. Then jogged once he had the ball.

I was thinking the same thing, but…
Metcalf wasn’t a ball-carrier in 2023 when he tracked down the defender that had intercepted a pass, yet there he is atop 2023.

The true test of fandom is knowing the fastest 40 times for fans to the parking lot during the dark days to beat the traffic.

Gray ran a 9.4 100 yard dash. This was hand timed back then so add a minimum of .2 seconds. Then for approximated conversion to meters add 10%.

Or about 10.56s in the 100m approximately.

That is pretty darn fast. Tyreek hill ran a 10.19s coming out but his personal record in junior college was sub 10s. I found a 10.5s run for Jamo but not much about it.

Earl McCullough who played for the Lions in the late '60s was very fast although he never became a star in football. He was a sprinter and a world record holder in one of the hurdle events.

From Wikipedia:

The USC Track 4×110 yard relay team, for which McCullouch ran the start leg, set the world record in 1967 that remains today, as the metric 4 × 100 m relay is now the commonly contested event.

I remember him.
He and Larry Walton were a very good WR duo.

Renaldo Nehemiah and Willie Gault

Herschel did the bobsled team I think Gault did too

I just wish for like the pro bowl they got ALLL of the fastest players in the NFL that year (regardless if they made the roster or not)

And have them run a 40 time and do 70 yard dash for top speed.

Pick like the fastest 5 players per position

NHL all-star competition type stuff. Run a lap that includes a 30-yard stretch, in addition to a couple of obstacles, stops/starts, cuts, etc.

Two tracks, side-by-side or possibly configured where the two contestants line up on opposite sides.
