In the NFL, who? I heard the same thing about Ben Johnson for years, and all that time no one could name a single coordinator who didn’t want to be a head coach. Some mentioned Tom Moore, but he’s on record saying he wished he’d have gotten the opportunity.

There are 29 coaches on the Lions coaching staff. So that means there are very close to 900 coaches in the league. I mean what percentage of that 900 do you think want to be HC? Like seriously want to be HC?
I get it. You are looking at just the Coordinator coaches and thinking all 64 want to be HC. And that may be true. But the other 800+ or 90% are happy doing their job and have no interest in the head gig.
This is obviously just my opinion but I was 100% looking at this from a big picture overall staff perspective. And maybe if you just look at the 64 coordinators it is more like 90% of that 64 or around 57/58 out of 64.
Well if you’re talking about every coach, you’re likely to be right. Certainly there will be a few, like the Pats old OL coach. But this thread is about Morton specifically (as was the post you responded to), so that’s why I went that route. I apologize if that’s not what you meant.
But I still think those are the outliers and the vast majority would take a head coaching job if offered. At the very least I don’t think it’s “the norm” no matter how far down you go.
And lets be honest here… A guy can say all I want to do is coach offense or defense. Then a different team offers you a 5 million dollar raise to be a head coach.
Ummmm yes you think about it. And if you tell your wife? You will be head coaching soon.
