Goff is the worst quarterback in the NFL under pressure since the bye

Was just noticing last night that “extending plays” is actually scripted with Dallas. I’ve never really thought about it that way. It’s either you’re in the pocket and when the pocket breaks down you scramble -or- you have designed rollouts. Chris spotlighted a play early last night where it’s
3-step drop
read 1, read 2, read 3
rollout
read 4
checkdown

I’ve assumed so much of that is “off-script” after standing in the pocket, but Dak’s reads and rollout were clearly scripted/timed.

We definitely agree here. Take that wide-open pass to LaPorta vs. the Saints. I haven’t seen ANYONE that open this year except Leaf, who I give credit to as a very nice route runner. Sometimes the D just forgets about him, which is fine with me because he’ll kill you.

Only other one I can think of is Jamo, and that is in no way an indicator of consistently good route running. It’s simply an indicator of being so fast you can consistently outrun your coverage.

All conditions must be perfect in order for Goff to succeed. That is not a QB worth paying.

You have just entered “The Dis-Wheel” zone.

He’s worth paying if you have the 7th highest scoring offense in the league. The question is how much is he worth? He’s not the 7th best QB in my eyes. I personally don’t have him as a top 10 QB. But he’s top 10 when he’s playing on a fully healthy Lions team. And that’s what really matters to us. What he is on this team. Put him in Carolina and he’d be playing in the CFL in a couple of weeks.

Yeah there’s nothing wrong with Goffs arm. That’s diss wheel nonsense. But like you point out we aren’t seeing the deep sideline passes like he was connecting with Chark last year. After Chark got healthy we were attacking deep a lot

I don’t get why Jamo can’t take that role. He’s really only used for blocking and clear-outs

On most of Goff’s deep shots last year there was hard play action and some boot element and he had a lot of time to set his feet and let it rip.

I don’t remember the last time Goff actually set his feet and fired outside of the Jamo touchdown against the Bears

I guess too it depends on what we mean by ‘deep’. He still has the third most completions of air yard passes over 20 yards (which is considered ‘explosive’) and is ranked third most accurate deep ball passer

Look up highlights of last weeks win. It’s chunk play after chunk play of well placed balls in tight windows

But when it comes to 40 plus air yard passes. We aren’t seeing as much this year as last. We were hitting that deep sideline to Chark pretty regularly after he came back. To be fair there’s not a lot of QBs who are throwing 40 plus yards often

And you’re either I also don’t get why we aren’t bootlegging it more if this pocket is going to collapse in 1.5 seconds

Yup. Adjust or die. They have to figure out how to hit the fades with Jamo IMO. I think teams are daring them and they can’t connect.

Lol I agree, and that’s what we’re doing , a slow death.

I think this is the reason McVay wanted Stafford, Goff doesn’t handle pressure well, when protected he can play really well, but when things go bad Jared has a hard time getting out of a funk. Jared is either injured that no one knows about or he lost his confidence again. Because he’s not the same QB as last year’s big finish. He seems to be throwing mostly the safe underneath stuff. When he does throw past the sticks the ball is coming out wobbly and late a lot. He just doesn’t seem comfortable anymore.

Right. That’s the bottom line.
I think it’s due to 2 things, and I’m going to steal a term from Herbstreet again (#2).
#1. Confidence in his blockers. When he has played well, even in the face of heavy pressure, it’s because he had developed trust in the guys protecting him. I think our injuries have strained that a bit too much.
#2. Answers. He is seeing his preferred targets taken away and doesn’t have an answer for it. Maybe the answers (Jamo) are there and he doesn’t trust him either, or maybe he’s just confused by what’s transpiring in front of him. Sometimes the answer has been to drill it into triple coverage (successfully).

Stabilize blocking and give him answers to what the opponent is taking away and he’ll execute in the face of pressure. I say this because we’ve seen this.

ALL QBs are better when protected
ALL QB s are worse when not protected
Level of flake factor under pressure is proportionate to fear, bravery, how physical of a human you are, etc.

Brock Lesnar went on a roll in the UFC, because he was super powerful & fantastic on offense
The second he starts getting hit in the face, he throws open hands up to defend & you can see his entire energy shift, because he hates getting hit in the face & has a bigger fear of it than most. It turned out to be his achilles heel. Punch him in the face & he loses all composure.

Goff, while amazing on offense, hates getting hit more than most.
Can you come up with examples of him standing and delivering under pressure?..YEP!
Thing a bout it tough → not his nature. In the “Man whoop a man” part of a football game, Goff is just never going to be a natural tough guy. QB sneak? No way!
Some QB s are athletes, some are tough guys, some are cerebral, some are warriors (LB in a QB body…LOL)…If you are in the NFL, you likely are some combination of them all

Goff’ s strength will never be, stand in the face of adversity & deliver. He can make that happen in moments, & that is why I believe we CAN win with him.
It isn’t his nature & we need to limit the frequency with which he has to do that.

How Goff IS tough
-work ethic
-commitment to the cause/brotherhood
-short memory after mistakes
-Tough enough to stand in front of pressure in moments
-Never give up in games where we are down

How Goff Is NOT tough
-Extremely unathletic, immobile, lacking in power
-Panic in the pocket at times, & doesn’t step up when he feels threatened
-strong discomfort in physical contact… not good at “■■■■ you here we come” mentality… not a “Man whoop a man” sort of guy

These stats are just Goff haters.
