I think a manager has a very large affect on a team, its just not quantifiable. And sometimes when its not quantifiable people think its not real. A GM, you can give him a scorecard to a degree (but what is harder to quantify is player development when he brings in raw talent - although that is also on his shoulders). But a manager is in charge of culture. Just like in football. Player development too. and bullpen management has also been an art form.
Right.
No NCAA BB pre WW2. (Well 5 years)
From 1939 to 1970 they went from 8-32 over time.
1970-1985 they were at 32
1985- 64+ (added 3pt line)
But 2006 the NBA added the 1 and done.
So
Vintage Era 1939-1970 ???
Pre Modern 1971-1985 - 1973 UCLA
Early modern 1985-2005 -1991 Duke
Modern era 2006+ -2026 Michigan
Just evens the eras out a little
And like the 1991 Duke team is more comparable to the 1973 UCLA than say 2024 UCONN or 2026 Michigan
Unless there was a major change like going from a six man team to a five man team, boundaries are just artificial. Youâre saying you canât compare a âvintageâ 1970 team with a âpre-modernâ 1971 team. Without such a major change (tournament size or the three point line donât qualify), boundaries do more harm than good. Just my opinion.
I hear ya. But the 3 point line completely changed the game. So that has to be one era divider
1985
Then the 1 and done rule created a massive influx of NBA talent into the tournament
2006
1970 they expanded the tournament, allowed multiple teams per conference and banned any team accepting other tournaments (NIT)

Over time. Not immediately though.
I mean you probably identified the biggst changes over time, but that doesnât mean you canât compare how good a team was during the time they played.
I think the best way to look at this is how the team did versus their competition at the time. And since the OP said âall timeâ, Iâd put a UCLA team with either Walton or Alcindor up there. They were just superior to everyone.
I would agree with that
While we are on the subjectâŚ
âŚwho is the best 2024 team of all time?
that sooooâŚ.. 2024.
I want posts about modern historyâŚ. in 2025. ![]()
