My youngest son is a fish farmer. He’s lived in many places (NC, Cali, TX, Hawaii, Baton Rouge, and lately Miami, FL) for the past five years. He was approached by a recruiter and was put in touch with a fish farm with an opportunity that he couldn’t turn down. He is now moving.
Some of you know that I’m in FL too. So although he was three hours away (outside of Miami), every couple months we’d enjoy a weekend together on the boat and just catching up.
The kicker: He is moving to (shutter) Wisconsin. Cheesehead land. He’s an Eagles fan and would never root for the Packers. But this just sucks…losing my buddy and to a state that is well…not on my list of places I want to go to.
I’m not familiar with Wisconsin at all. It is one of only six states that I’ve never been to. He’ll be in EauClair. I guess I’m going to have to visit EauClair, Wisconsin. I’m going to feel dirty. Is there anything redeeming about EauClair, Wisconsin??? Ugh, I’m having a hard time with this.
The only good news is that he and his mate will finally be able to afford a parcel of land where they’ll raise horses, train dogs, and explore.
An Army buddy of mine was from GB and as you can imagine a huge Packers fan. After we got out of the army I went to visit him. Was a pretty awesome place and even though I was a lions fan the people were cool about it.
Been to Eau Claire a few times. Wisconsin has good people nearly everywhere north of Milwaukee and Madison. North of Eau Claire is sportsmens paradise. Eau Claire is only about an hourish from the twin cities if you are more into bigger populations.
We haven’t got much snow the last 10 years. There are some cool places in Wisconsin (not as nice as Michigan), Lake Michigan and Door County, the western edge of the state along the Mississippi River, the shore of Superior and the Apostle Islands just to name a few. Once you accustom yourself to them turning into complete dipshits during football season, you’ll realize there are good people throughout the state. Another positive, I don’t deal with nonstop phone calls on game days any longer, hardly a peep out of the cheeseheads.
change can be good man, and think, you will have new areas to fish, once he gets familiar with the area , new views, new scenery, you still get to see him at times-might be hotter women where he lives, who knows. and it will be ok talking football with cheesehead fans as long as you be civil, food might be great there to.
Make an annual trip to meet up in Minneapolis for a Lions/Vikings game (you can both hate on Minny). Delta hub is there so easy to get good flights at decent prices.
They play every year so it can be an added bonus to waiting for the schedule release so you can start planning that year’s trip. Based when we play Minny can determine what you guys can do.
Pretty sure you can find any fresh water species you desire. I know Muskie fishing is huge in the Hayward area. Just a bit north to Superior or Ashland and you can fish trout and salmon on the big lake.
Wisconsin is the best michigan adjacent state by far. If you like to drink you’ll have no issues.
Be thankful he’s not going to Illinois (technically not adjacent sure, but still).
Lake effect happens on the leeward side of a Great Lake, and generally the winds go west to east over Lake Michigan and Huron, with some southwesty type as well. Buffalo gets just destroyed by it.
