Hockenson among those contributing the least from top half of 2019 Draft

Take a look at the great Tony G’s rookie season…TE is hard as a rook.

I guess it depends on who else was available. Not sure either i just dont think too many drafted after us could have helped much more. Let me ask you this though. Would it sting any less if you knew Hock would turn into one of those 2?

Thing is is he has a chance at it.

The point is that picking a TE at #8 was stupid.
An NFL team will get the same production out of a 3rd round pick.
If Hock doesn’t perform on the Kelce or Ertz level then yea…it was a really bad pick.
Would you rather have Hockenson and a 3rd round DE or a top DE prospect at #8 and the 4th or 5th best TE prospect in the 3rd?
The chances of finding a game changing DE in the 3rd round is not very high. The chances of finding a top TE in the 3rd round is pretty high.
Just an awful use of resources by Quinn, but he is smarter than all the other GM’s.

If you could guarantee me TJ would have the same career as Zach Ertz I still wouldn’t have taken him 8th.

For him justify being taken there he has to be an alltime great at his position and play on that level before his rookie deal is up.

Oh yeah, no doubt. I’ve done a ridiculous amount of research on this stuff and its crazy that there are virtually no exceptions to it. Mike Ditka is the biggest outlier, if I recall. Shockey is another one, but its interesting that he had some issues for the first half of the year and then found his stride the second half of the year. Even HOF Kellen Winslow wasn’t an exception. He had 255 yards on 25 receptions his first season, then blew the F up for 1,300 yards his second year. Blowing up in the 2nd year happens a ton. The first year struggle is real though.

I think with good health Hock can end up being a better player than Ertz. I really wanted the guy that went next but if I’m being honest much of that was Bc my toddler’s name is Oliver and I really wanted to get him that jersey. I tried to talk my wife into changing his name to Hockenson but she wouldn’t go for it.

Would you take Tony G 8th overall? He had 368 yards and 2 TDs his rookie year. He was drafted 13th overall. Knowing their stats they only one i think would have contributed more is Devin Bush.

I understand the frustration with the season already over before T-Day AGAIN, but it’d be crazy to call Hock a bust at this point. Or even a bad pick.

I dont think anyone is calling him a bust yet. I think people are upset at draft status vs production.

Too bad the Lions didn’t draft George Kittle in 2017 instead of Michael Roberts.

Most TEs are interchangeable, and if you aren’t going to make Hockenson one of the centerpieces of the offense, then why spend a high draft pick on someone who can do the same thing in the 4th round?

Generically I would rather have a top DE and 3rd rd TE. There werent any DE prospects when we pick though.

We’d all like to draft first round talent in the 4th. I completely agree on Kittle. The bad thing about Kittle is we had plenty of draftniks clued in on that one and Quinn blew it.

That said, I think Hock has shown some promise but its clear to me that much of his issue is experience. He’d gonna be good.

Devin Bush should have been the pick for the Lions at #8. I know…hindsight, but isn’t identifying guys that are going to be studs the job of the scouts and GM?

Noah Fant and Hockenson have almost identical stats so far this year…including both their teams have 3 wins.

Stats are just stats, they don’t tell the whole story.

Honestly down in and down out Bush hasn’t been as good as the splash suggest. He’s a Jarrad Davis level tackler and he gets fired in coverage.

Brian Burns has produced an absurd amount of pressure for a rookie.

I would take him over Bush and Hock at 8 no doubt.

I felt that draft night and feel even stronger about it now

Does Fant have Jones and Golladay to compete with? I would have take bush too.

I would take Burns as well. I was hoping for allen, would have liked burns and bush as well.

Do you mean, does Fant have Golladay and MJ that a defense has to account for?

Sutton and Sanders (until he was traded). Kind of a wash.

I don’t have a lot of issues with Detroit’s offense so I’m not overly worried about Hocks rookie production. I guess the point here is was there a defensive player at 8 that would have made a difference for our shitty defense. Don’t think so. I will say that after seeing how bad our front 7 is Oliver, Bush, or Burns would have been a better pick.
