It will be interesting to see if Hooker gets major reps in pre season. Maybe we showcase him in case there are major QB injuries approaching the trade deadline. Maybe we can recoup some draft capital. I see no future for him in Detroit
With 4 preseason games he is likely gonna see a ton of action. And Hooker’s love some live action
he’s got to show something positive or else, I would use him heavy in preseason to see how far he has come.
Why wouldn’t he have a future here? What was the point of drafting him then? And why would someone else want him if that’s the case?
I feel like people here want him to fail. I want him to be a HOF’er.
No one wants him to fail, people are looking at it practically. Do you think he’ll get a chance to play unless Goff gets hurt before his contract is up? Unlikely. Do you think he’ll re-sign with us just to sit behind Goff? He’ll be 29 then, don’t forget. My hunch he would prefer to sign somewhere with a clearer path to playing time. It might not be for a lot of money and it might only be short-term, but players want to play.
You draft him in case you catch lightning in a bottle. QBs are different that way. I will rarely complain about spending draft capital on one. And if you don’t catch lightning in a bottle - and at this point it seems like we didn’t - then you have a floor of a good backup with upside, which I believe he still is, no matter what happened last year.
It’s hard to imagine Hooker not getting first half reps in all of the preseason games. He needs them. We need to see him do it. It he can’t handle it, just one injury, rather than the pile of injuries we had last season, will sink us.
It doesn’t make any sense. Why was he drafted? He was drafted relatively high. To take over for Goff? To be a back-up? I’m not exactly sure what lighting in a bottle means. Brad knew he was going to be out his first year. Brad knew he wasn’t going to take Goff’s job at least not right away. Brad new he’s a developmental player and that it will take time.
People are writing him off. He’s basically going into his 2nd healthy season. Every player, especially project players need at least 3 seasons (healthy). Where’s this evidence that he won’t be a good QB?
And again, what was the plan? Was he supposed to light it up with one leg? Was he supposed to light it up in his 2nd season only having ever played shot-gun? Was he supposed to take Goff’s job now?
I’ll tell you one thing, he’s going no where if he’s getting better and reaching that potential. And if he does he will take over for Goff. Teams don’t let good QB’s go. And if he is a bust (like many are implying) there is no trade value. Look at Trey Lance.
Hooker is not going anywhere. I said it before and i will say it again. Bridgewater joining the team had to do w a prearrainged deal to get him a vhance at a ring. Allen is a camp arm to push him and get the most out of him. They expect him to excel…hooker is not going anywhere.
Completely agree. Not to mention he looked good to me in pre-season. I have no idea what will happen, but I’m still hoping he becomes something special.
I don’t think he’s going anywhere either, not yet. But what about when his contract is up? Will he take over for Goff then? Will he willingly sign on to be a backup?
I just thought your accusation that people actively WANT him to fail was unfounded.
Million dollar question. Goff gets another deal in Detroit so tbh, i don’t think Hooker was ever thought of as successor…but perhaps an insurance policy. So many teams goes years looking for a good second backup. I think this is their practice. Every few years take a young talented qb early in the draft ans cultivate him…maybe Goff has a career or season ending injury…maybe he shits the bed and forgets how to play football. Either case you have your potential successor already in house. Eventually Goff will retire on his own and Hooker 2.0 or 3.0 will be here ready.
Much better strategy than Sudafed, Tim Boyle and Colon Blow
I think Brad loathes the idea of being painted into a corner for sure, and I commend him for taking the chance on the potential bargain that was Hooker. I hope he continues to do that at QB, and suspect he will.
But since drafting Hooker Goff has had two of the best seasons of his career. Really it’s less about Hooker and more about Goff at this point. My expectation is that we have Hooker as our QB2 the next two years - one I think has the potential to be very good - then we let him go. That would be my best guess, because I don’t think we’ll hold him hostage as Goff obvious backup. That’s not how we operate.
For that to change imo, Goff would have to get hurt and Hooker would have to play unbelievably well in relief. Certainly that’s a possibility, but it’s not one I’m willing to bet on. Which makes the other scenario far more likely.
yup…lockstep agreement.
When you have a good hooker, you pay to keep them around. They are very hard to find.
Trust me…I know
Trade talk of Hooker is foolish. Holmes will never trade Hooker at least for severalyears. Injuries happened and he could be a solid backup. Holmes is cool with Hendon father. I bet Holmes has told Hooker to be patient, anything can happen
Agreed. It isn’t that people on the board want him to fail. However, the signing of bridgewater last year didn’t fill me with optimism about hooker. After two years with the team he should have locked down the backup quarterback position. Hopefully he can put it all together this year. I just don’t have the high hopes I had for him going into last season.
I think there’s still plenty of upside to Hooker, he’s basically coming off his rookie year and QBs notoriously take a while to hit.
I’m not overly worried about bringing Teddy in either, I don’t think it was crazy that we didn’t want Hooker’s first legit NFL snaps to come in the playoffs. That’s setting him up for failure. Certainly I think it means he wasn’t grabbing the bull by the horns, but again, most QBs aren’t at that point in their careers. Especially coming back from injury and a year off.
I mean even Goff at the end of his first year playing wasn’t someone you’d feel all that comfortable plugging in to a team with championship aspirations during the playoffs. And those wouldn’t have been his first snaps, like they would have been for Hooker.
Big picture though, I just don’t think his future is here. Goff has solidified his hold on the QB1 spot, at least through the end of Hooker’s rookie contract. I just don’t see what else we can do with him other than let him go, either in FA or via trade.
Hookers are always in season. Just ask @jman.
I’ll be honest, I don’t understand the infatuation with Hooker. The dude is basically the same age as Goff and hasn’t shown much. I know people like to downplay the Bridgewater thing, but Brad flat out said this offseason that Hooker wasn’t ready to be the backup in the playoffs.
