Howie Roseman collecting draft picks

Right now? Holmes is the greatest GM the Lions have had during the Super Bowl. The list of Lions GM’s doesn’t make that very impressive, but still, it’s true.

Eagles have results, so that’s where people look to see “what they’re doing.” That’s also how you end up playing a Tampa 2 with inferior players.

what’s a bogus option year.

The 1, 2 or 3 years of cap allocation on a contract beyond the point where the player is really under contract. Pardon me for saying bogus.

I don’t think any . . . who are you thinking?

You shared a number a week or so ago of a team’s spending against future cap via option years and compared it to us. I can’t remember the numbers, but I thought it was Detroit v Philly. Hell, it may have been for the whole league.

OP if you think Howie is first and Brad is second, you think we should replace our GM? Your argument sucks. Both teams have used different philosophies and are great. Just enjoy it.

I don’t disagree with the OP that Howie is the best GM in the NFL. Brad, while certainly he’s been a Godsend to long sufferers, we still have to see how far his philosophy takes him. That said….Howie has never come close to having the challenges of building a team that Brad has had.

They lost some real talent to FA this year as a result.

I don’t buy that they are better or in a better situation but I will agree they draft well and are on a great path to future success.

This was Philly’s projected void year hits for players not under contract. (I think Mailata’s contract and someone elses didn’t transfer to Nick’s post, because a salary is listed under Mailata instead of Void).

This was done before the start of the league year, so 18M this year won’t transfer because of Slay’s and Bradbury’s release. CJGJ they traded away, so instead of $14.25M in 2027, they have $4.7M this year. They added money to Barkley when they did the extension, so instead of $21.4M in 2027, you now have $31.1M in 2029.

Now the “bogus” option bonuses would be for the players that wouldn’t reach the year before the void calculation. i.e. if they cut Hurts in 2028 or before. I’m not sure if anyone falls into that category.

I do know what you mean now by bogus option year. Now, if I remember correctly, Roseman signed both Slay and Bradbury to an extra year (or reaffirmed their current contract), by including an option year for 2025 that wasn’t expected to be honored and both were going to be released in 2025 with a June 1 designation.

Anyways, I don’t believe any of the names have a bogus option year, I believe all options are expected to be honored.

After UFA, I was going to look and see how we stand up against Philly’s void years again.

Not with void years they weren’t. No one has ever come close to advancing as much money as the Eagles have in recent years. The Patriots are and were during the dynasty one the cheapest franchises in the league by overall cash spending.

Howie drafts well, but he also has an owner willing to pay up hundreds of millions of dollars above what other teams do.

It’s also worth remembering that Howie took eight seasons to win a Super Bowl, and even then it was with a miracle run with Nick Foles. After four seasons he was 32-32 and 0-2 in the playoffs. Brad is 39-28-1 and 2-2 in the playoffs. Howie only achieved this mythical status as a GM after a decade in the job, coincidentally around the time his owner started spending hundreds of millions of dollars more than any other team.

You can’t compare apples and oranges. If the Lions start spending huge sums of money and game the salary cap like Howie does, then sure, you can compare them, and if you want to blame Brad for not spending like the Eagles then that finger should be pointed at Sheila not Brad because he doesn’t control the finances of the whole organization.

I totally whiffed in how I processed what I read (Multitasking is not one of my strengths) and then asking what I did.

Shit! That 400M IS void years. In a word, that is pending dead money in it’s truest sense.

For whatever reason I was thinking the 400M was all pending prorated cap charges (active years and void).

What happens with the void money from slay and bradberry? Wouldn’t they accelerate to this year? Or were they post June 1 designations so all of it gets pushed into 2026?

Exactly, but the option bonus that would be due on 09/01 would go away on 06/01. For cap purposes option bonuses are assumed to be exercised, until they aren’t. So if Slay had a $10M option bonus to go along with his vet minimum bases salary and he had 4 void years (2026-2029), he had $2M allocated to each year, so instead of $10M counting this year, he has $2M allocated to each year 2025-2029. So when the he’s released on 06/01, it would reduce his cap hit for 2025 by $2M and his dead cap for 2026 by $8M (when the void years accelerate into the following year). And this would be done because the $10M option bonus that was due on 09/01/2025, was never exercised or paid.

Only cash that has been paid has to be recognized against the cap.

I think Howie is a great GM because he won two superbowls. I also think he’s been GM since 2010 (15 years) and nearly lost his job twice because his decisions weren’t panning out.

While I do wish we didn’t gamble away draft pix on small school longshots like Sorsdal, BroMart, Vaki and Manu, I think Brad is just as good or better than Howie. He’s just much earlier in his tenure.
