Hutch Contract Extension? Hmmmm

So what is the hold up? We got the Kerby deal done. I really thought Hutch would be extended by now. Holmes wants to see Hutch play post injury before paying him? Hutch’s agent is asking for the moon. Maybe both?

What do you crazy animals think the hold up is? I kinda want to extend him now before he has 20 sacks and the price doubles next offseason.

Your thoughts?

If I were his agent, I’d be stalling for exactly that reason.

It’s a monster contract and Hutchinson is under contract for the next two seasons making #2 overall pick money. It will get done. I haven’t looked at the contract extensions. Maybe it is a larger cap strategy and the hutch extension is planned for next seasons cap increase? It’s difficult to know without being in that building.

Good point. It’s very similar to Sewell last offseason. Sewell had 2 years remaining and extended last April.

I’d think the Lions would want strong medical and visual evidence that he’s fully healthy. He should be from the “simplicity” of his injury but that’s a boatload of money at stake.

If I were his agent, I’d want it done now before Brad locks in on the backup OTs Hutch started against last season to have that glittering start.

I think they want a 4 game sample of old hutch. As soon a that happens they will pony up. He’s not a free agent til 2027. They have franchise tag too. I don’t think it would ever get to that.

Exactly. Hutch is already is line to be the highest paid defender in NFL history. A 20 sack season this year really wouldn’t really increase his value, it’s already about as high as it can go. Only difference is the cap will be slightly higher and maybe an edge rusher like Parsons signs first, which Hutch would surely top.

I’m in no hurry to sign if I’m Hutch, I’m handing over a blank check if I’m Holmes and cringing.

True, a family member of mine spoke to Hutch’s dad and the Hutchinsons have the same concern…

Lions haven’t dished out a lucrative contract to anyone coming off an injury yet .

Might not get done til next year

I think it gets done before the start of the regular season at latest.
Hutch still has some rehab milestones te Lions would probably like to see him pass before finalizing the contract.
They will get to see Hutch up close and personal through the OTA process.
Hutch is also in no hurry as there are other Edge Rushers (Hendrickson, Parsons, Watt) that can raise the salary threshold if signed before him.
I think the extension is announced before the start of training camp or the start of the regular season at latest.

In fact it’s been the opposite under Holmes… Paid Ragnow immediately went out for the season. Paid Okwara immediately popped his achilles. Paid Alim 5 games later his ACL explodes. We have had some terrible luck after paying guys.

I think it’s a year too early. And it does make sense to see if that leg can be as good as it was pre-injury. But what the hell do i know?

You forgot Tracy Walker, played 3 games before his injury.

I would consider Barnes’ contract to be lucrative. Not the 40+ mill that Hutch will get but still proof that Holmes has done it.
