My position always was that he’s a great leader and motivator and he was a horrible in-game coach. I said 1000 times we could keep him Monday through Saturday then lock him in the locker room on Sundays.
And for all of last year and the first half of this year that was a correct assessment
Honestly he has made great strides as an in-game coach the last half of this season and has dialed back his craziness to where he’s taking calculated gambles not reckless ones. And that is why he has got me to believe. He has shown the ability to learn and adjust. And I can respect that.
First of all, good on you for “almost” eating crow. Not everybody can swallow their pride and admit when they’re wrong.
As far as his game management is concerned, I don’t think him dialing it back has to do with learning as much as it has to do with having a healthy roster and not needing to take as many chances. I fully believe he took all those wild 4th down chances because he didn’t have the personnel to win games in a conventional manner and had to compensate by taking more risks. I don’t think it’s a coincidence that he’s taking less unneeded chances now that the roster is healthier.
While I’m a fan of Campbell and have stuck with him through thick and thin, he still makes some in game errors. Not calling the timeout after the two minute warning play when the Jets had a 3rd and 27 late in the first half and kicking a 54 yard FG in a cold weather outside road game defensive battle up 3 late were questionable moves. Other than that, he brings a ton of good to the table, too much good to list in one post but game management still needs some work.
Actually, the ones who should be eating crow are the ones who said our expectations were to high for this year. Some were even stating that this was going to need potentially 4+ years to clean up the mess that Quinn left and that we needed to be patient.
This only proves that they were wrong and those saying we should be pushing for the playoffs in year 2 of a rebuild and in the playoffs by year 3 were right.
And i know it’s probably taboo to talk about it right now, but quite frankly some of Campbell’s reckless decisions earlier in the season may have cost us a game or 2. Sure would look nice being 9-5 right now and still in contention for the division.
So nope, absolutely no crow eating for those that were saying what happened through our first 7 games was completely unacceptable.
Where are all those folks who said we shouldn’t have expected this and our expectations were too high?
Year 1 = no expectations
Year 2 = pushing for the playoffs
Year 3 = in the playoffs
That is how it should look when a new regime comes in.
Where are all those folks who were bragging about how they predicted 4 or 5 wins and how right they were?
