but I am too cheap to pay someone to do it. My Wife waited til she destroyed her calipers to tell me her car was making a noise so now I have to do Calipers, Rotors and pads. She wore the calipers down enough to leak all the fluid out. I am off work today because I had a dentist appt. I would much rather be at work! Anyone on here that’s a mechanic my hat is off to you.

I love working on cars. keep my wifes and daughters cars running best I can but I cannot for the life of me imagine running brakes down to the nubs. I mean that had to be making noise for a WHILE.

I hate paying thousands for brake work. Figured out a long time ago that changing pads, rotors and even calipers (although the last umpteen times I’ve done it, the calipers were fine) is not a complicated task for someone with even a little mechanical knowledge. Just need the basics for tools. It’s about as straightforward as it gets.
The problem these days is now that I’m older, I can only do one wheel per session. I get so sore from being on my knees and torqueing, twisting, bending… Lord have mercy! I end up feeling like I went the distance with Tyson. Of course, if I was in better shape it would help I’m sure. But it really sucks doing it now. If I had a lift, it would soooo much easier.
But the fortune saved and satisfaction of feeling manly and resourceful is worth it in the long run.

I dont like changing the brakes but beats paying a mechanic for something so simple. Wife and I both have hybrids now and brakes on those are supposed to last 100k miles, so nothing I need to worry about anytime soon.

lol, like all the idiots that don’t know “hey you got to keep a good eye on the oil your car is using , keep the oil changed regularly , and don’t let it run out. then they go “I don’t know what happened.” “it made funny noises and then my car won’t start.” “did you ever check your oil buddy?” “what do ya mean !? “

Karma bit me when I ignored recall notices and then that flaw shut my car down, I didn’t think that if it didn’t turn up in the 1st 17 years that it would actually turn up

Wife’s father was a great mechanic, worked his way up to being in charge of a shop at a Cadillac/Honda dealership. From there he worked as a consultant for GM and Mercedes dealerships. To this day if I don’t drive her car there would be no maintenance done. That oil change sticker in the top left of the windshield? It means nothing. I feel your pain @JimLiohey.

I used to really like working on cars in my youth. First car was a 67 Mustang that I fully restored. But I am much lazier these days.

I once helped a friend work on his brakes. It was that Cadillac that was really just a re-badged Cavalier. He had worn the rotors down to the ribs.
I also hate working on cars, but am a utilitarian personality that can’t NOT do it. It brings me no joy to work on cars when I do. Plumbing, HVAC, Contruction, Excavating, Flooring, Drywall…. all immensely satisfying. Working on motorsports or daily driver type stuff? Hate every minute.

I don’t mind doing the basic stuff. I am handy enough. I am just too cheap to pay the labor charges associated with most car work.
YouTube has everything nowadays too. I’m about to fix something on my Silverado and found the video on YouTube and looks super easy.
