If Dan Campbell coached the Tigers

Which players on the roster (majors and minors) would be his favorites? Another way to ask this - who are the Tigers grittiest players. Who comes to work every day to get better? Who are are future cornerstones not because of their talent, but more because of their talent + work ethic? Its very hard for me to get a read on this, but I’ll submit a few:

  • Tarik Skubal (which is why I don’t want to trade him…he’s a bulldog)
  • Colt Keith (I get a good non-nonsense vibe from him)
  • Wenceel Perez… just a feeling.
  • Jake Rogers (a glue guy, does the dirty work).
I also get a good vibe from Ibanez.

Conspicuously absent - Riley Greene, Tork, Carpenter - I simply don’t know about these guys, not saying they don’t have it, I just simply don’t know.

Any minor leaguers? WOuld love to hear from anyone but especially @Weaselpuppy , @frm710 , @Bols , etc

Skubal for sure. He’s an animal. Maybe Perez, he seems like a max effort guy.

I’m not really sure about anyone else. None of them are like Gibby used to be where they go, and give 100% all the time.

Plus that, baseball players are pussies.

Brandon inge would have been a Dan Campbell guy 100%. Not sure about anyone on this current roster. Greene maybe?

Yeah if we are gonna do an all-time team we can probably have a nice little list.

Dave Rosema?

Skubal is the easy obvious answer and I think you are right on Perez as well. Rogers and Keith I agree.

Chafin
Flaherty
Ibanez(the K Raymond of the Tigers)
Olson

Too early but I think they fit the passion, character grit description
Clark
McGonigle

I think Greene and Carp have the passion, love of the game and the grit so I think they would fit. Just baseball is 162 games and body takes a different type of beating. But, as I type and think about it, Greene fits with his glovework alone gives it his all.

Agree with you 100% on Inge. Really liked to watch him play.

One of my favorites, also due to a bias, having chatted with a couple of times, at a bar in ST and at games in lakeland. He did a lot of work with UM baseball over the years as well.

Thanks @frm710. There’s only one semi-surprise on that list: Olsen. Maybe a silent assassin? Interesting that Flaherty and Chafin are there. I’ll watch them more closely.

Oh, I can easily be way off, lol.

I just think the battle to get there is so different in baseball than football, it’s a much bigger longer hill to climb in my mind. Chafin is a farmer, dedicated family guy but has a passion for the game. Olson was just a gut addition for me. I think a lot of the Tiger players fit from a character standpoint if not most of them.

Good subject.

I think vierling would be a Campbell guy. He does a little bit of everything and is solid.

Can you eat kneecaps in baseball? I guess you could have your pitchers throw at kneecaps… the other team can’t run with dislocated kneecaps now can they.

I think Jung will be that guy too. Good list from frm.
