That’s why I’m surprised Shedeur hasn’t handled the spotlight in a more circumspect manner over the past year. It goes beyond him throwing his offensive linemen under the bus after he was sacked five times in Saturday’s loss at Nebraska. It’s also having his work ethic questioned by Miami quarterback Cam Ward, another potential top-5 pick, after the two trained together in South Florida in the offseason. And him making a disparaging comment about a former teammate after the player transferred. And legendary QB Tom Brady joking (?) that he needed to get out of the car showroom and into the film room after he posted pictures in a Rolls-Royce.
Sanders has to know he is going to be judged differently than others. For one, he is a quarterback, which is the premium position in football. For another, he is a quarterback who happens to be Black in a league that only recently has viewed African Americans as capable of excelling at the position. And thirdly, he is a quarterback who happens to be Black and is the son of Deion Sanders, a man whose confidence, flash and bravado rubs some the wrong way. To think that Shedeur won’t be judged more critically is to be naive.
That said, none of these things will prevent Sanders from being highly drafted. But they could create openings for unnecessary and unwanted drama leading up to the draft, which has a voracious appetite when it comes to inane storylines. See, Cam Newton and [“fake smile” ]
To me it’s very different than Johnny Eightball. Yes they both have out of control egos but so do most QBs and you want some of that I think. Johnny had a disease. It was really bad and in some ways I think the high profile nature of his struggles may have saved his life. Sanders’ life isn’t out of control. He just does things like calling out teammates which are so far out of line with what you can have at that spot. Manziel was a lost soul or perhaps more fitting a soul jn the vice grips of addiction. Shaduer is a lost leader.
I have a couple of friends that have been HS coaches at high profile programs in the country all of them don’t like what they see from Sanders. Their views didn’t start this season but last season as they saw his demeanor on the field and on the sidelines.
All three thought he, and a couple of other Buffalo players, needed more discipline and doubted Coach Sanders was going to provide it.
If we’re drafting a QB3 give me Cam Rising in like round 7. He’s exactly that Heineke/Minshew type of kamikaze QB that can win you some games if forced into action for a couple weeks. Though you are buying in knowing that there is a zero percent chance he’s ever a starter. But down there big whoop.
Maybe he just needs to grow up and mature a little bit like jamo did. I have a feeling the environment he’s drafted into is going to propel him to stardom or destroy him. He feels very boom or bust to me right now.
I realize that this didn’t happen in 2022 but in general a QB or two get over drafted bc of need. I wouldn’t be shocked if he was one. All of this year’s guys have warts IMO.
