Is Cooper DeJean Lions' Cornerback of Future?

The issue is when we want to go cover zero and send the house we do not want to watch CC Lamb catch 90 yard TDs.

It is about having the ability to run blitz packages and not get destroyed on the backend.

And who knows what AG would run if he had the ability to run more press man? Maybe it is so low because he knows he is leaving himself and the defense vulnerable to the deep pass?

Well, sure, but this is where I’d think they want guys who can ALSO play man. Not exclusively play man. I just think the approach of taking a guy off the board because he primarily plays zone is a little odd considering we’re in zone 20% more than we’re in man.

Ideally, you want a guy who can line up in both zone and man, not either or. You can make the exact argument about man guys who don’t know how to feel a zone and how to pass out defenders properly. How many times have we seen poor zone play lead to broken coverages because a guy isn’t in the right spot or doesn’t trust that his help is there?

Cooper is the epitome of detroit grit! Lions are pushing Rakestraw but they really want Cooper.

  1. Cooper DeJean - DB Iowa
  2. Zach Frazier - C/G West Virginia

Cooper will be there at 29 .

IMHO dejean isn’t a great fit scheme wise. He’s a zone corner. Preferably a move around piece that can play some safety, slide inside, etc. he’s not a quick twitch man coverage kind of guy. In that Iowa defense he barely ever turned his back to the ball. He’s a good player and seems like a culture fit… but there are quite a few corners in this draft that I think will fit that as well… but have tape of playing tight man.

I’m guessing he will be gone somewhere between picks 13 and 16.

There are soooo many bonus points for anyone who gets that joke!!

Let me clarify.
I believe if you can be a press man corner you can figure out zone. But I have watched my fair share of zone guys who can not run press cover…so my assumption (and clearly I am no expert) is that if you can be a press man CB you can be a zone CB. But if you are a zone CB it may be very true you can not be a press man CB.

People have had their own ideas of who AG is and what he wants to do. In a recent interview, Hutch laid it on the table. After the Raiders game fans noted how ā€œextra aggressiveā€ AG was. Hutch said THAT is who AG is and who he wants to be. He wants to blitz aggressively and TRUST his DBs to hold up in coverage. He wants to drop back into coverage and TRUST his few rushers to beat their man and get pressure.

So AG wants to be multiple, but we are missing some key pieces at the same time. We need AT LEAST 1 more guy who can hold up in man coverage. That allows AG to explore more packages in that area. I think fans are right when they say we need at least 2 more guys who are good in man coverage. And if they stink at zone, obviously that is a deal breaker.

I’ll bet you a fictional Harbaugh cheeseburger he won’t be, he’s the next Patrick Peterson

I wanted dejean already, but now that the punny potential has been shown I’m all in

I don’t by that Cooper’s not twitchiness to be solid in man. He’s a great athlete and a hard worker. He’ll figure it out even if his pigment is always a bit lacking.

My joke was that he’d be gone somewhere between picks 13 and 16, which belong to Seattle and Las Vegas, which is pretty much where DB Cooper disappeared (between Seattle and Reno).

His skin pigment has a significantly higher drag coefficient. He has been battling it his whole life. Walking to the mailbox is a struggle. That’s why defenders with the same pigment condition tend to be ā€œhigh motorā€ guys. Since every single minute of every single day is a struggle, fighting thru 60 snaps is a breeze.

Dejean is built like a rb. He’s stiff. Maybe he can play cb… but there’s also almost no film of him playing man coverage. He’s also injured… so you can’t test him to see if maybe hes not as tight in the hips as he seems. But you probably won’t even get a sense of that until after personal workouts… and there’s essentially no film of what he would need to show he can do. It’s not the fact that he’s white. And again… hes a good player… he’s just definitely a safety at the next level. Or maybe a cb in a strict zone scheme

So everyone an most do have him ranked number one CB. He is stiff you say? OK
The former high school quarterback (who also lettered three times in basketball, track and baseball each) won the Iowa state long jump title (23-7 1/2 inches) and 100 meters (11.16) and has continued to get more explosive since he’s been in college"

He’s built like a Gibbs RB. Gibbs would probably make a helluva CB :man_shrugging:

Love him, but he certainly has the drops for the making of a good CB. Step it up Gibbs. Hit that Juggs.

Most CBs don’t catch great that’s why they are secondary instead of WR’s or pass catching RBs

That was my point. Gibbs had the dropsies this year. Granted, I’ll give the rook a break; hence me saying hit the Juggs. We’re on the same page.

This is an excellent articulation of the constant struggle faced by honkies every day because of our heavy-assed pale skin.

Thank you for acknowledging this terrible burden.
