Jags hire Liam Coen as HC (Official)

Listen we are all basically in love with this coaching staff. I think a bunch of it has to do with the Netflix show where we got to see them all operate.

On a side note. I have been surprised by the number of coaches that have bounced between a coordinator position and position coach. I would have guessed that was a very low number and yet I feel like it is more like 10-20%.

Leave it to Florio to be completely tone def here…

Did Florio even look at Coen’s bio?

Cohen has been an OC in the NFL for 2 teams…
and his first job last only 1 season with the Rams.

He wasn’t officially ā€œfiredā€ā€¦ but pretty unlikely that the Rams let him walk away from his contract if they wanted him to return for a 2nd season. This is a prime example of how many times football coaches have to uproot their lives for better or worse.

With only 2 years of NFL OC salary and 2 years of SEC OC salary to go along with 11 years of much lower salary positions… Coen hasn’t exactly set his family up for yet.

He now gets a position that likely pays him $48 or $60 million guaranteed to be one of only 32 HCs in the highest profile sports league… and Florio tries taking a shot at him???

Florio even pointed out how shady the Bucs organization has been over the years with some of their coaching hires earlier in the same article!!! If the Bucs feel jilted for Coen sprinting off to a life changing job…. then I say that reflects more porrly on them than it does on Coen.

Say what you will about Ben Johnson, but he wouldn’t do this. Bucs fans are pissed. It also might add unwanted competition for who the lions want as their OC (allegedly)

The people who are butt hurt over this, I can guarantee you, never do big business deals. This is common practice, he didn’t sign a contract, he’s negotiating the best deal and the Jags countered at the 11th hour… Coen isn’t in the wrong. BB back when he took the Jets job, then resigned the next day, THAT was a dick move… This is not.

Right, it’s a bad look but in the end not the big deal it’s being made out to be. Especially since his contract with TB was contingent upon no further contact with the Jags… of course he was gonna go behind their backs lol. Kind of a stupid stipulation honestly.

Ben would never have had to ā€œdoā€ the same thing….

because Dan and Brad would never try to force a coach to take a deal contingent on limiting their success as a person or professional.

Bucs fans should be pissed… that the organization continues to make questionable decisions with their coaching staff.

Technically he could have signed to stay with the bucs and still taken this job after doing that. Its still a promotion to head coach. Nothing bucs could do about it.

That’s correct… It’s not a marriage, it’s business. Honestly, I’d be a little hesitant to sign with a team that tries to make sure I couldn’t advance my career if I so choose… Kinda shitty

Non-competes are literally everywhere in business. Also a common practice. FFS, many contracts won’t let you go to a competitor for 3, 6, or even 12 months AFTER you leave a company depending on industry - let alone immediately.

This non compete is againt league rules allowing upward movement. Teams cannot stop other teams from hiring for head coach anyone unless they are already a head coach.

Many non-compete clauses don’t hold up in court.

It is hard to argue that a person can’t make a living in the eyes of the courts.

Was mostly just speaking on business practice in general, but you’re right. In 2020, the NFL made blocking upwards promotions pretty unblockable. Though, I don’t know how that applies when it comes to the ability of a team to write it into a contract.

EDIT: Looked up the language and found:

So, kind of odd that TB would even attempt to do this since it appears to go against the explicit language of the updated NFL policy. LOL.

Really depends on where you’re at and industry. I’m only familiar with MI and NY, where NCAs can definitely be used as they’re both time, space, and scope states.

A lot of companies will definitely try and ā– ā– ā– ā–  their employees with bullshit NCAs, which is why a lot of them don’t hold up, but a NCA that is well-defined and with good reason is going to hold up.

Looks like the Bucs need a new president.

Can we trade them Rod Wood for beans?

That’s to protect their customers and contracts with them… That does not apply to this. Non competes don’t hold up very well in court unless you’re literally stealing your previous employers customers or using their intellectual property. The NFL is it’s own entity and all team employees are part of the NFL umbrella.

I agree, the league may look into this instance as a clear violation of rules. Maybe Tampa will be penalized a draft pick

Title of this thread is so confusing. So Coen is Jags head coach? Not Bucs?

Sorry, hard to tell who Coen is accepting a contract from at any given moment :joy:

I forgive you! This time…

Actually, the FTC made a rule banning non-competes for basically all employees:

There’s currently a stay on the enforcement of the rule due to litigation, but the rule is still in play.
