Bienemy “stayed” because noone else wanted him. He had a fake title, was pumped up in an artificial way by others and teams knew he was a flaming a-hole that didn’t belong in an NFL HC position. The Commies took a chance on Bienemy and they were not even thru their first camp when players were having back channel conversations with Rivera about issues with Bienemy. By seasons end Bienemy was released from his contract and is no longer in the NFL.
I characterize Eric Bienemy as being the wrong guy in a great situation. Many other people could have taken his role with the Chiefs and springboarded it into a HC opportunity. Bienemy was simply not the right guy for it, and people kept trying to will it into existence. We were even told we made a mistake by hiring Dan Campbell over Bienemy.
Not sure why folks think Ray Agnew want’s to be a GM. He and Holmes are like best friends. Agnew made a decent amount of money in the NFL so it’s not like he needs it.
My point, becoming a GM, you have to hire some guy you’re not familiar working with. It’s a lot of factors you have to consider. It’s not easy to work with most owners in the NFL.
Brad talks about how much the Greensboro area means to him, and how he likes being around people who are from the area. Ray is from Winston-Salem, which is one city over. Ben Johnson was born in Charleston and graduated from HS in Asheville. Duce Staley is from Columbia. Duce left, but I hope the rest of the guys just say “fuk it, let’s all just stay here for as long as they’ll have us!!!”
(and of course Hendon Hooker and Emmanual Mosely are also from Greensboro)
I’ve very familiar with the Triad area as with Charlotte. I lived in Gboro for 10 years and still visit a lot. Most of the people from the area are very close knit.
Agnew attended Carver high in W-S and was an all-american at NC State. I worked with woman who was a very close family member of DJ Reader who played high school football at Grimsley high (off Bryan Blvd.) then Clemson. Alim from Raleigh and was a stud at NC State as well
I see him as a cancer. I’d hate for Ben or AG to go there but at least they’d be out of the conference.
In years past when posters got worried we might lose AG I felt there was zero chance he’d get a HC job. I can’t say that any longer. He’s grown as a DC and someone will likely offer him an opportunity to be HC elsewhere.
I think AG is far more likely to take that NY job. That whole operation is a train wreck that I don’t think Ben will look past, but AG might given his ties to the team and the area.
Kind of like Demeco. No one remembers but the Texans job was the “worst” one that offseason, they have an owner who’s hated league-wide for that inmates running the asylum comment, a lot of people thought he was racist, and they’d just come off two years where they were forced to hire the only guys who would take the job. No one wanted that job… except Ryans, because of his history there.
That said AG also has deep ties to New Orleans. I think he’ll get a job for sure.
Another factor may be how we finish this season. If we will it all, AG may be at peace with moving on to his head coach chapter. If God forbid we lose in the playoffs, he might have “unfinished business” in Detroit, which is what Ben Johnson said last year.
Just because you’re an excellent coordinator that does qualify you as being a leader of men (head coach). This is why a lot of coordinators fail. Their personality isn’t organic and players see through them.
Case and Point - The guy who was never a coordinator before getting the HC gig, Dan Campbell!
I was just talking about the Peter Principle with someone this morning. Its interesting how many roles in life are like that. The “thing” you did well to get the next opportunity are not the skills you need when you get there. Its like being a parent. What I did to become a dad is absolutely NOTHING like being a dad!!!
Glenn was actually a scout for the Jets in 2012, and 2013. If I was a betting man that is where I would lay my money.
I also think they could take one of our front office guys hoping they can have a relationship similar to Dan, and Brad. Personally, I don’t think it would be Agnew. My money would be on Mike Disner.
Just because you are friends with someone and enjoy working together doesn’t mean you will turn down an opportunity for generational wealth and an equal position. The Jet job may not be the best, but there are less than 32 GM jobs (Jerry Jones is the owner & GM of Cowboys). Agnew is 55. The next GM offer he gets may be his last.
Agnew played in the previous century.
He made good money (less than $14M in his career) but nothing like the generational wealth players earn today. Most GM’s get to hire 2 coaches before they are fired.
As a GM Agnew could earn twice as much as he did in his 10 year NFL career.
Agnew doesn’t have to hire someone he isn’t familiar working with. Most hires in the NFL are based on relationships. Agnew has been in the NFL his entire adult life. He has worked with dozens of coaches.
If he were to get the job I think his #1 target would be Aaron Glenn.
