Decent chance add 2mph after surgery and rehab is complete.

Unfortunately, it might be a good thing that he’s getting this out of the way.

Also, this would be a great time for the $15M we spent on Alex Cobb to give us some returns.

I hope I am wrong, but the odds on him pitching over 50 innings this year are less than he doesn’t

In the MLB, it’s estimated that 35-37% of all pitchers have undergone Tommy John surgery at some point in their careers. This translates to a significant number, with 1,000+ professional pitchers having had the surgery. The number of surgeries has also been increasing, with a 29% rise in the percentage of MLB pitchers who’ve had it since 2016.

The recent rise in TJ surgery seems a little counterintuitive based on the well-regulated pitch counts these days. Perhaps pitchers are giving their throws a little more oomph to make up for their truncated time on the mound?

The loss of the precious pre-arb/pre FA contract is the biggest bummer.

I dislike being the pessimist here, but I’d be surprised if he pitches at all this year outside of his rehab in minor league ball. Last I read is he was still having pain and limited mobility in the few innings he’s worked at A West Michigan and AAA Toledo. Always a chance for a turn around, but certainly not as hopeful at the moment as anyone would like.

Yea, the focus on pitching has changed so much over the last 20 years. The spin rate etc etc, several articles on impact it is having on the arms and the increase in surgeries.

And starting much younger than they used to.

There are freshman and sophomore high school pictures, throwing crazy curves and 90+ mile an hour fast balls.

Like by the time they hit MLB they have already been pitching high end stuff for 6+ years.

Jobe.
Close to 150+ innings in highschool between sophomore to senior year.

Then another 250 in the minor leagues.

Thats likely 7000+ pitches of high speed high spin.

Higher velo and spin earlier and earlier. Travel ball tourneys. Then you have the not stridently banned but also not well understood effects of kids and age 18-22+ using hgh and precursors etc. You will not be able to convince me that guys like Stanton and Trout, whose jacked, tight bodies are breaking down didnt do some stuff that have them over muscled beyond their ligament/connective tissue ability to carry/stretch/react. Rendon too. Probably more than a few pitchers.

■■■■■■■ Jazz Chisholm cant stay healthy At All and he is wiry…I worry that the Bahamas (he is the first star from there in MLB) are kinda the wild west, “development” wise…

I wonder if it has anything to do with coaches trying to tweak a pitchers pitching motion. It seems as though this has become almost generic in its approach. Are coaches pushing young pitchers to use a throwing motion that is what has been determined to be most effective effective by the experts instead of allowing a kid to pitch how he’s always pitched since childhood.

There’s a reason kids develop certain throwing motions over the years and then to have it remastered to mirror what’s considered best may cause issues. Back in the day pitchers seemed to have such diverse throwing motions while today it’s a one size fits all.

Good point on delivery mechanics. A lot less unique styles. Personally what I see is a ton of throwers and not pitchers. All about velo and spin rate… Guys who learn to pitch have long careers… The Jamie Moyer, Chris Bassitt, Sonny Gray types. Guys throwing low 90’s with good location and a great mix of other pitches to keep hitters off balance and eat tons of innings. They are a dying breed unfortunately.

Great points.
