Campbell should have let the play clock go to 1 and then have called a TO instead of trying to get them to jump offsides. As we know we were flagged on that play.
Gibbs absolutely did the right thing both times and I sure as heck hope Dan Campbell agrees.
Yes heard Goff say that as well and that Gibbs should have gotten the first down but he was worried they would pull him into the endzone so he dropped quickly when he saw they weren’t trying to tackle him. If Gibbs could have done it again, he’d try to get to the one yard line.
As the greater strategy, if you can go up by a full touchdown, I think you should try and do that even with up to 2 minutes left. The other team has to drive all the way down and get the touchdown sending it to overtime. Hard sure. Now if they are super gutsy they can go for 2 and you lose but then your defense really let you down.
The Lions several ways risked Over Time or even a Hail Mary chance to GB by milking the clock and the penalty or missed FG.
I’ve seen teams lose both ways so personally I’d take the touchdown when it’s there.
The only time I think you have to milk the clock is when say you are down by 2 so they let you get the quick TD putting you up 5, and now they have 2 minutes to drive down and score for the win. That may be a place where you consider taking a knee at the one and milking 90 seconds off the clock before scoring the TD.
That’s exactly it. Say the holder, center, blockers, and kicker (Bates) are 95% for that short field goal. With our D, does Green Bay and Love have more than a 5% chance of scoring a TD with 20 seconds left? Actually, i think its pretty even — it probably is about 5%.
OK I went back and re-watched the end of the game and made changes to the OP. The first time Gibbs went down was with 2:00 left…Absolutely the right thing to do to go down and milk the clock…GB uses their last TO.
The second time he goes down its with 1:08…he would have scored with about 1:00 left. So, again - absolutely the right thing to do to not give Love about 1:00 (with no TO’s) to score a TD (and maybe go for 2). With 1:00 left, I think there’s more than a 5% chance they score – maybe 10-15% chance.
We absolutely did the right thing, and I gotta believe Dan and Drew are making that call into the huddle.
I was about to say this exact thing. The second time if he goes in there is like a minute soooo.
The main difference to me since MCDC has taken over is that the Lions seem to be much better at situational football and especially at winning time. MCDC is not batting 1.000 but he is up there.
If this team ever gets the defense figure out we will be a juggernaut.
@ Jersey Jungle, I could not agree more. You are spot on. 1:00 min is more than enough time for disaster to strike and I would bet they would have gone for 2 as well.
I would tweak this and say under MCDC we went from “Don’t Lose” to “Lets play to win”
I am not always happy with how MCDC or the org handles things but one thing I do appreciate about MCDC is he is always making the calls tryig to win it. He is never trying to hang onto a win and not lose. He is balls to walls to a fault…LOL
shoot I bet the Viking board doesn’t like that` moron fan of their’s @ThePolishPistol , and sent his ass here to rile us up JUST so he could return to their board a hero for quoting what we said to him, about their team, about this upcoming game, about what we claimed, and about what we called them, very trollish behavior.
I think that decision is already made and practiced. It think the internal debates and what-ifs and all that goes into prepping for situational football came to the surface a bit. Like, they reasoned already that in this situation this is what you would do. But then, after the fact and you’re still milking the clock, there’s a bit of “what if we made a mistake” that creeps in.
Pretty amazing that we spent a second round pick on Jason Hansen, who was amazing, but were able to pick Bates up from the brick salesman heap as a free agent. Hats off to the team for finding this guy and signing him. So far he’s been great.
