Lions' Kerby Joseph: 'I Feel 10 Times Better'

Safeties: Kerby Joseph, Lions; Ji’Ayir Brown, 49ers

TruMedia has a metric that measures the passer rating by opposing quarterbacks against coverage players; Joseph ranked third last season (28.0). Emerson, above, was fifth (28.7). Joseph had four interceptions last season, but, with improved talent around him, the Illinois product has the opportunity to put himself in Pro Bowl and All-Pro consideration.

The depth chart has been cleared for Brown to see more playing time this fall. He played less than 400 defensive snaps in 15 games last season but managed two interceptions. As he gains more experience, his play could take a jump.

Kerby definitely is a playmaker… 8 picks in 2 seasons. Not always consistent, but all the turnovers he forces really impact the game.

Also if you have healthy ACL’s stay away from him.

It’s a fine line cause I want him to be a ball hawk, which he has been. But ball hawks are gonna get toasted sometimes too. And that’s okay as long as he keeps making big plays.

Name a Lions safety with 8 interceptions in his first 2 seasons other than Kerby… I can’t off the top of my head.

Yep. His presence is going to make QBs pull down when they are thinking of launching a deep ball in his vicinity. They will no doubt know his rep as a ballhawk. So, even if his production drops his knack for INTs may result in more sacks.

In theory having better corners should really help too. You can gamble a bit more when your corners are actually good.

I think we will run a lot of man to man with Kerby playing cover 1 over the top. Essentially in that ball hawking center field spot.

First two seasons in the league? Or first two with the lions? Glover Quinn comes to mind for the latter.

That’s what I meant.
