Im sure I’ll get blasted for posting this, but some might like to read it rather you agree or not.
I think it would be a pretty fascinating offseason. Not the way I’d go personally, but it would be exciting af for sure. Honestly, our 1st in 2026 after this would probably be damn close to the 2026 2nd they were giving back to us.
I think there are a couple of moves he’s made that are pretty unlikely though. I’d be really surprised if CD was that cheap, and I don’t think there’s any way Caldwell lasts to the 6th. Could be wrong about both of those, but that’s how I see it.
I love the idea of bringing Levi back this year though.
Is that the best Cleveland can do the 2026 2nd is likely to be like only a handful of points lower than our 1st? So basically a 1st and two 3rds plus a little bit extra.
With one of those 1sts essentially being cancelled out by that high 2nd rounder, it’s more like one 1st and two 3rds, right?
Why would you resign CD3 and then go after Adebo in FA? Especially after giving up so much draft capital to get Garrett?
Anything with Myles Garrett content gets no click from me. I got tired of hearing about that fantasy long ago.
Why still the curiosity in a deal that would ruin everything in a few quick years?
A fair take, and I agree that I wouldn’t do it, nor do I think Brad will do it.
But it’s just a bit of offseason fun. And this actually lays out a more in-depth plan than most of the click bait articles. I wouldn’t be thrilled if it played out this way, but I would definitely be excited.
Sorry. Mispoke. Yes, that is what I meant. Two firsts becomes one first plus a minor pick swap in all likelihood.
Which is actually more along the lines of what I’m hearing it would take, but who knows with trades.
I think the lions need to really tip the scale towards ‘this year’. windows are tiny. our best chance was 2 years ago. last year, aside of the #1 seed the injuries on D were just too great.
I’d push the majority of my chips in. Obviously don’t trade the entire future but I think the time is now.
I personally hate the idea of letting Zietler walk. Considering he was already coming off a Pro Bowl berth when we signed him, I doubt he gets much more than what he got last year. I don’t see why he would not want to come back and play for Fraley again and have a shot at a championship. 1 year, 8mil with most guaranteed makes a ton of sense for both sides, IMO. Mahogany and Zietler to start with Graham the top back-up on the interior.
Why are windows tiny? If the scouting department keeps over performing the window stays open.
The articles proposed trade
2025 1st round pick (No. 28)
2025 3rd round pick (No. 101)
2026 1st round pick
2026 3rd round pick
DT Brodric Martin
In exchange, the Browns send this package back to Detroit:
EDGE Myles Garrett
2025 5th round pick (No. 165)
2026 2nd round pick
A classic case of 2 things can be true at a once.
I agree time is now time to push.
I also agree windows can stay open as long as you have a QB and an OLine
I will always believe the best way forward is to make the tournament as often as possible and hope you get the breaks. So much luck is required to win (especially if you don’t have an all-timer at QB) and everyone just refuses to acknowledge it.
Pushing all-in rarely works. The Rams stand out as an exception, but as much as the guys they brought in, luck played a major role for them. I mean, how many 4 seeds get to play the NFCCG at home?
The Eagles caught a MAJOR break this year with all of our injuries. We were the better team overall. They also caught a smaller break with the Chiefs OL injuries. Joe Thuney is a great iOL, but he’s not a tackle.
Having an all-timer at QB changes the math, but outside of that the best option is to stay the course like the Ravens, Steelers, Packers. I’m sure their fans wish they had more Super Bowls to their names, but they’ve won a few over the years, and like I said, the all-timer QBs keep getting in their way. But those guys aren’t easy to find.
I truly do. He’s 30…. So far the K Mack, T Hill, D Adams, type moves haven’t worked out extremely well.
Giving him 4 years and 150M alone might be enough to dissuade 75% of the league without draft comp factored.
At least 25-33% of the league likely wouldn’t trade two first for an aging edge (regardless of his skill set) given where they are in “their process.” I can’t see NE, NYG, LV, etc trading major assets for him.
Only Buffalo, KC, Philly, SF, GB, Detroit, Baltimore, Washington, Houston, etc could really claim they are in a “window”….
Very few teams have even 30M in total cap. So they’d be losing top draft capital and either have to restructure or avoid signing some other key players.
Would I do it as Detroit? Tough to say.
-2025
28- JT Tuimoloa
101- Tory Horton
-2026
32- T Booker
96- JJ Pegues
Bromart
That’s about 8M AAV for 4-5 years aside from BroMart
So you could damn near cover Kerby and Gibbys extension with be other 36M
More actually because it’s 8 players against cap vs just 3
Or
Garrett- 4 years 150M
-2025
165- Nick Nash
-2026
38?- Allfred Collins
That’s about 40M AAV for 4 years.
I know I used players from this draft but my point is next year there will be a late first OG and a 3rd round DT similar to what I proposed.
Here is the thing: if the Lions don’t think Myles Garrett is worth two first and two thirds, who does?
Whose closer to a SB roster than we are?
I guess its not impossible, but the Lions have an opportunity to fill arguably the biggest hole on their roster with an all-time great. And they don’t think the price is worth it…probably.
So if they don’t think he is worth it, then who does? People say a team like the Commanders wtih a rookie contract QB. Okay, but I think the Commanders are more than Myles Garrett away from a SB roster (despite how they beat us last year). They are going to want to build around the QB. Not give away the farm and deplete themselves of picks. I suppose a KC or something might think about it.
I dunno, I just think ultimately either Garrett will be traded for far less than this projection, or he’ll end up staying in Cleveland.
It’s a good article. I like most stuff Risdon puts out. He’s not even saying he thinks it’s going to happen but there’s nothing wrong with speculation.
My biggest concern is he ends up in GB or Chicago. Hell I guess Minnesota could be involved as well but I figure they are more likely to go after Stafford if they think they can make a SB run with that roster.
If Holmes goes after Garrett I’m all for it. If he feels like it’s too much to give up then I get it as well. But please add some more pass rushers. Definitely need talent along the DL.
That’s a pretty weak return for Cleveland. Their 2026 pick could easily be only a few spots lower than the Lions 1st rounder so it would essentially be a late 1st and two 3rds. Don’t see why the Browns wouldn’t hold out for more.
Also, that Carlton Davis projected contract seems awfully cheap. Maybe his injury history dries out his market but I can’t imagine it being that dry for a legit #1 corner in his prime even if he misses 1/3 of the season often times.
If Holmes can land Garrett for that proposed amount and signs Davis to 2 years $19m even if it is incentive laden while also getting Garrett and Kerby locked up and Levi for fairly cheap, give him the GM of the Year award right there and then.
