Lions Mt. Rushmore

Fun to do every once in awhile.
Mine might have six faces but we should stick to four.
Matt Stafford, Barry Sanders, Lem Barney and Joe Schmidt.
I’m going to give honorable mentions to Calvin Johnson, Yale Lary, Lou Creekmur, Bobby Lane and Charlie Sanders.
I didn’t start this thread to argue the merits of my choices. These are all viable candidates. So are yours.
Hell if I had my choices Corey Schlesinger and Chris Spielman would be there, too.

Billy Sims, too.

Ndamukong Suh

Three were no brainers but i picked Suh for the simple fact that you could put him in anytime period and he would have still been the force of any defense. Plus, I’ve always loved the play where Steven Jackson had a huge hole up the middle, then Suh grabbed the back of Jacksons jersey, while Jackson was full steam ahead…Stopped him right in his tracks…Who does that.Lol

Interesting
There’d have to be some criteria
To me Suh could never be a Mt Rushmore candidate
He played for the Lions for just 4 years and scooted out of town as quickly as possible for cash

Anyway — I think to do this justice, you’d have to have maybe Bobby Layne in there
At least one player from those championship teams

Hey Yoop — Chuck Schmidt huh?
LOL
I never considered him as much of a GM
Now, if you had said Joe Schmidt you might have my attention!

(I know, I know)

Matt Millen. So when he is on top, the others can shove him off the edge!!!

Agree.

I like Yooper’s picks. (I know he meant Joe instead of Chuck LOL)
Dline guys I’d put ahead of Suh, - Alex Karras, Robert Porcher, Doug English, Al “Bubba” Baker, Jerry Ball.

Think I’m seeing some recency bias there. :stuck_out_tongue_winking_eye:

You can see some of the younger fans choices are time sensitive.
Billy Sims was great. More years and he is right up there but injury cost him. Calvin was great, but who do I kick off for him, Layne was great, Stafford is better, just my personal opinion.
Middle linebackers, Joe Schmidt, Mike Lucci, Wayne Walker, Chris Spielman, Stephen Boyd.
Some of the DL mentioned earlier like Porcher and Karras, even Suh
Dre Bly, Herman Moore.

No love for Robert Porcher? My favourite Lion defender of all time.

Seriously, I’d go with:

Barry
Bubba Baker
Charlie Sanders
Alex Karras

Really like these four BitterSyd

The correct answer is

Bobby Layne
Lem Barney
Yale Lary
Barry Sanders

Can’t go by stats, they don’t translate from era to era.

I left off Night Train Lane because the bulk of his career was played elsewhere.

I’m sure almost everybody here will be sleeping on Lary. Take a look at this. His place on the mountain is indisputable, and no other Lions WR comes close.

This does beg the question of criteria however. Is it based purely on on field play? How about someone like Herman Moore who played extremely well but perhaps not quite at the level of some of these guys but has done more for the organization and city than most others? I would be OK with HM based on his full body of work on and off the field.

That’s a good four, but can’t see a Lions Mt. Rushmore without Joe Schmidt.

I’m going to be chuckling to myself for the rest of the day over those who put Stafford and not Layne.

Nothing more revelatory about the modern Lions fan and his expectations.

Barry Sanders
Joe Schmidt
Dutch Clark
Matthew Stafford
