Check this out! If every player was healthy, the only positions groups that the Lions can’t go two deep and have a solid replacement are T, OG, C, LS, K and P.
Everywhere else, if healthy, can go two deep. And the OL is where we have the oldest players. That’s why Zeitler leaving and Ragnow retiring hurt so bad.
You were exposed at a young age. Could almost be called abuse. I was raised by extremely fair weather supporters (can’t call my family fans really). But I truly latched onto Lions after reading a massive article in the freep about Billy Sims. That subsequent season, 1980 was the beginning for me. I guess I changed somehow and needed a team to really get behind.
Skip/Manu is better than what 80% of NFL teams have as backup tackles. Plus Lions lost Jones at OT early on, another depth piece gone.
Plus Colon/Eguakun at C, same deal.
Colon, Awosika, Skip are reliable backups, with Equakun, Manu and Frazier more developmental guys.
Look at other teams’ rosters of backup OL and see a wasteland of cast-off vets, busts and UDFAs (both of which we also have to an extent, of course, because that’s how you build depth cheaply), then you’ll maybe appreciate the depth BH assembled.
There just isn’t enough talented olinemen. That’s why all the good ones go early in the draft.
A lot of teams have terrible starters even. Guards are easier to find. But finding good offensive tackles is difficult. And teams that have one, sure aint trading them
I would feel a lot better if Jamarco Jones was available to play LT in place of Decker. He has flaws but he is pretty good in pass protection. He is not big and not a great run blocker. But that is why he is a practice squad player. Skip and Manu are terrible in pass protection. I think as long as Goff is our QB we should have a priority on pass protection in a backup LT.
I just remember them chasing Tarkenton for what seemed like 3 minutes and then he would throw a perfect strike or run for a first down. SOOO frustrating. As good as some of the mobile QB’s are today I am still not sure any of them are more elusive than Tarkenton was.
You’re not going to like Hubbard’s recent history. OT who stinks in pass protection and is a good run blocker. But can play the 6th OL role, a la Skip.
A crazy gif is just what I needed today, man. I’m friggin’ spent and don’t know how I’m going to recharge for another day of the same ole shit tomorrow. A little belly laugh is bound to help.
