It can also be the inverse. Great coverage converts pressures into sacks. Reed is a fantastic man cover corner, is very physical, and possesses that ‘dawg’ mentality. He rarely gets beat deep and brings his lunch pail in run support. He’s small yes but very feisty and never gives up on a play. IMO he’s an upgrade over Davis III and was 4 million per cheaper. Holmes did a quick pivot and made a very good signing here.
But I also agree that they need upgrades in DE depth. It’s coming. By the end of April anyways. FA just started as well. After what Holmes went through last season you may even see an over correction at DE.
My guess is that “DJ” is for Dennis Jr.
When you look at free agent rankings many sites have DJ Reed over Carlton Davis. PFF has Reed at #6 IA and Davis somewhere between 20-25 I think.
Here is why I like Reed MORE than Davis:
Holmes choose Reed over Davis.
In 2024 options were limited and Holmes got the best man CB he could get and that was Carlton Davis. When faced with a Davis V. Reed choice Holmes signed DJ Reed. Good enough for me.
Many sites valued Reed higher than Davis too so others agreed with Holmes too.
I am happy with this deal. Sounds like Holmes took one from Glenn!
I actually think CD3 and Reed are pretty equal.
Both very good M2M corners.
You give up size with Reed but he is a little more feisty.
Holmes actually went to retain CD3 1st and drove the price up for CD3.
The Patriots were more desperate and went to a contract that Holmes wasn’t (3yr/$60M).
Holmes made a quick pivot to Reed and still paid a bit more than he wanted, but got an equivalent M2M CB for slightly more than he was paying CD3 in 2024, but significantly less than what CD3 will earn.
My point is a LOT of sites have Reed ranked higher.
Holmes had a LOT of opportunity to extend Davis and he didn’t. Reed’s $ is similar and I feel like Holmes choose Reed over Davis as soon as Davis had a price that Holmes was never gonna meet. Brad struck quickly meaning they were NOT flat footed.
I feel like the Lions are the same or better at CB with Reed over Davis.
I like the signing.
I think CD3 and Reed are pretty equivalent so some will have Reed higher and some CD3.
But we can’t deny that Holmes turned to Reed after CD3 got too expensive.
He’s back end of day 3 IMO.
What you got on Hunter Wohler?
Pretty sure CD3 was intent on testing Free Agency. Not sure I completely agree with this.
I do agree that we have the same player, essentially, for the price we wanted to be at. Had CD3 re-signed for 16 mil, I’d have been happy with it.
Mid to late day 3 I think. I like him though. Safety3 in waiting and ideal ST player.
Hoping for “late” but that boat will probably sail by then.
I’m thinking round 5 if I had to guess
I sure hope.
Here is my opinion for those who do not think this is a great signing.
Dj Reed is a good player so it’s a “good” signing, but he is not a “great” player. I personally don’t think he’s better than CD, but CD is also a good, but not “great” player. Sometimes teams over-pay for players, but for the most part the money tells you. Reed wasn’t signed for “cheap” that’s just fans hyping him up (which is fine!).They are both in the same maybe B grade tier. Otherwise they’re making 100+mil.
How would I define good vs great? Great to me is Sauce Gardner. So these guys are a full notch below. Which means, good is still GOOD!
However, you don’t always need that. It’s not about a bunch of all-stars all the time. It’s about pieces. It’s about philosophy. They want a physical hard hitting secondary. The Lions value stopping the run. And they value versatility. It looks like AG philosophy is sticking around which i LOVE. Reed fits like a glove. And again, he’s a good player.
Would we want Deion Sanders? Hell yea! Of course! But Deion does not fit! Which would make the defense worse.
