That is strange… Must have thought they were keeping him.
I found this from their head coach too…
“If you had 90 Roys, you’d be good to go. We got a lot of good guys. But Roy, he keeps a good attitude, he’s always working on his game. He’s team-first. He’s willing to do whatever you tell him to do. He’s got a smile on his face. He’s a phenomenal human being and he enjoys coming to work and he gets better at his game. So, yeah, I’d love a bunch of Roys.”
I think it might be this. Edit: CuriousHusker found it first.
The 2025 NFL Combine is underway and the Detroit Lions are in draft mode, but they’re also in free agency mode as well. Lions GM Brad Holmes took to the podium in Indy and let out a little bit of information on a free agent they’re looking at when talking about the Lions defensive line.
“I was looking at our game at Arizona in Week 3. We’re looking at a free agent.”
We wondered who that could be and now we know. The Lions are signing former Cardinals nose tackle Roy Lopez to a one-year deal
I don’t think he was signed to backup Reader. I think he was signed to play next to him. Remember, the Lions are looking for someone with decent size to replace McNeil for over half the year. Signing him to a 1 year deal makes a ton of sense. He is a stopgap until McNeil can take back over, plus the Lions can draft a guy and let him develop behind Lopez and McNeil.
I know earlier it was mentioned that this doesn’t bode well for BroMart. I don’t think this move affects BroMart. However, the fact the Lions are talking to Deone Walker, THAT move screams goodbye BroMart. They are literally the same player. Massive NT’s. They are even nearly the same height.
For the record, I think drafting a NT who is over 6’4 is a mistake. Too tall equals poor leverage to push forward and allows the guards to drive you backwards. DE’s can be that tall, but not interior guys.
Speaking of confused, can we get a mod to edit the thread subject to Roy Lopez? I couldn’t find any info and then realized I was searching the wrong name.
I think it mostly seems fine. 4.75 seems high, but who knows if it’s an “up to” contract. Also, looking at the contracts that IDL are getting this offseason, doesn’t seem crazy, either
