Lions sign free agent OLB/DE DJ Wonnum

Hes an edge setter. Big DE. What Paschals job was. Just contain. Keep everything infront of you and let the LBs and DBs make the play.

That our secondary was so beat to shit that teams threw on us more than running?

Running downs they had

Lacy, Reader, Williams/McNeil, Hutch on the DL.

And the 3 Lbs were always on the field.

They couldn’t stop a nose bleed

Nope. It means we used AQM on 3rd downs and in passing situations. He was rarely on the field on 1st down or in short yardage situations.

Was mostly being facetious because we continuously ignore the side opposite Hutch every year and say stupid things like “we’re good” when most people know full well that we’re not.

We had Davenport , paschal and levi were good (they played a combined like 15% of snaps)

AQM and Wonnum combined would actually have been a pretty good defensive end. Wonnum does the dirty work on early downs and AQM cleans up the QB. We need to replace the AQM role for sure

From the Freep on why Wonnum over AQM.

Muhammad’s deal is really a one-year, $4 million contract with another $2 million available in incentives. Wonnum’s contract is not yet filed so it’s impossible to compare true dollar figures − and while they’ll probably end up being similar, they don’t really matter in this case.

The Lions viewed Muhammad as a designated pass rusher more than an every down defensive end. He never started a game last season despite injuries at the position, played just 40% of the Lions’ defensive snaps and was on the field for only 82 run plays, according to the NFL’s Next Gen stats.

Wonnum, by comparison, has topped 50% play time in all six of his NFL seasons, and played a career-high 83% of defensive snaps in games he was active with the Minnesota Vikings in 2023, according to Pro Football Reference. Last year, Wonnum played 665 defensive snaps to Muhammad’s 420, with 264 of Wonnum’s coming on run downs.

Muhammad was more effective than Wonnum as a pass rusher last season by every metric, per Next Gen Stats. He had more sacks, more pressures (59 to Wonnum’s 28), a higher pressure percentage (18.1% to 8%), a quicker get-off (.91 seconds to .92 seconds) and took less time to get pressure on opposing quarterbacks (3.03 seconds to Wonnum’s 3.41 seconds).

Wonnum was more effective against the run − he had 26 run stops to Muhammad’s four. And while it can’t be ignored he had far more opportunity to make plays against the run, Wonnum is a better fit as the “can crusher” the Lions like to use in the big-end spot opposite Hutchinson.

I mean Wonnum is exactly the sort I would think the Lions want at this DE spot. Which is why I’ve been talking about Keldric Faulk. And if you want a 4-2-5 or whatever next year, which we might have to go to without AA, you need big guys like this to stand up to the run with fewer guys in the box.

Both Wonnum and Muhammad’s contracts ended up being grossly over reported. Wonnum was only 3 mil.
