Yeah, they looked at a retractable roof and decided it wasn’t worth doing, unfortunately.
But a training facility downtown would be cool.

I do wish Ford Field was bigger…loved the Silverdome fitting 80 thousand plus in the 90"s… That place was so freaken loud. Never experienced Ford Field even close to that level of noise. Even in 2017 was at the Packers vs Lions game in primetime. Lions win, we win the North. Crowd noise was decent but not even close to the Silverdome days.
I don’t know if it would be Downtown.
Land might be too expensive for a large plot of land to handle at least 4 football fields administration building and parking.
I believe they also want to have a major development around the facility of hotels, and entertainment.
It is still several years off but might be in a city like Canton that still has some open space.
Also could be at one of the failed mall sites as they are all collapsing.
The Northland and Eastland sites are already being redeveloped but Oakland Mall or even the Fairlane Mall sites seem to be on their last legs.
Wonderland or Laurel Park Mall sites in Livonia.
Mall sites offer big plots of land that would allow big facilities with space for fans to park and are usually near freeways and have potential for development in the area.
Yeah, agree.
Didn’t we get a penalty for excessive crowd noise at the Silverdome?
Yep. Right before Reggie Brown almost died on the field! It was insane.
Barry hit 2000 yards and a guy named Stephen Boyd was the Lions best player that day
This comes up after the Dallas fiasco stuff and there’s more to it in the article. I’ve actually have come around on my lack of trust of Rod Wood, he sounds like a good business man that had to adjust to the NFL Culture. I guess winning cures everything.
There hasn’t been much movement on the Lions building a new practice facility. Rumors have swirled about possible locations near Willow Run Airport, in Ann Arbor or downtown Detroit, but Wood said they’re not that far along in the process.
He did acknowledge there is appeal to consolidating operations downtown, related to the city’s I-375 project, which is scheduled to begin construction in 2025.
That’s not true, Nate. They will be building MCDC and Jared Goff statues after they win the Super Bowl.
Not a lot of wear and tear on FF, in fact, up until a couple years ago I’m not sure that some of those seats had even been sat in. Pretty sure that the only changes will be cosmetic.
There were hundreds of flags thrown for excessive crowd noise back then. It was a rule that your crowd couldn’t be so loud that the offense couldn’t hear the signals.
First they would throw a flag and warn the crowd, then they would start issuing 5 yard penalties if they didn’t quiet down.
It was pretty lame.
That Soldier Field 2003 renovation always looked like hot garbage to me. Like it was designed by Two Face from Batman.
I’ve been fortunate in my career to work on numerous professional and collegiate stadiums arena’s etc. Currently working with the architect and GC on the new Miami soccer stadium, roughly 90,000sft of metal on the project.
Ford Field needs some more modifications but no way do I see them buildng a new stadium, it isn’t needed. There are a few things that they should address, it isn’t a “big” need now but will be in the near future. I’ve always wondered if there would be an opportunity to eliminate the translucent walls, huge problems with that product, and go to glass. Could go with tinted glass which would eliminate the bird issue and possibly provide city sightlines.
I’m about to take on a consulting role, with one of my bldg mfrs, at the national level that will include working with the big stadium/arena architects. This was always one of the best part of my previous national roles and excited to reopen those doors.
You’ve got a good eye, it was hot garbage. Still e stadium was pretty crappy before the remodel. Sometime or other about polishing a turd.
Can we have the stadium in Hamburg Michigan ? So we have games in Germany
I could see FF becoming slightly bigger and more modern/hi-tech with fancy touches, down the road in the next few years, don’t think it will be immediate.
No. No. No. Ford field is fine and in no way in need of rebuild. Unless the Ford family wants to pay the whole bill, I’m against this wholeheartedly
I wanna see mini go pros on helmets, wifi linked to the jumbotron.
Let’s annex Ontario and build on the river …
Yeah, let’s not. I prefer a guarded border between me and @stephenboyd57.
Leave Canada Alone!!!
