6 games - NFC North division
4 games - Select NFC division
4 games - Select AFC division
2 games - 1 team from the 2 NFC divisions that were not selected that year. So if we play the NFC West that year it means playing 1 team from the NFC East and 1 team from the NFC South matched to our finish in our division.

That was the end of the old 16 game schedule. The 17th game is 1 AFC team that the league determines the NFC North is matched up with that season, and we play the team in that division that matches our finish in our division. So basically its an extension of the 2 games from above, but its an AFC team.
