Is that after Mayhew the Fords actually capitulated and allowed the League to come in and quote-unquote advise them on their selection of a GM, which means basically they had to hold her hand through the entire process. So Quinn is not just the last rump shaker in a long conga line of terrible Ford decisions, but was seen generally by the Football World At Large as the best guy available.
And this is my point. If at any time it looks like there’s somebody who’s going to be a better option than Quinn, then they should make that move. Just because he was the best available that season doesn’t mean he’s any damn good.
Quinn played his last cards when he hired Patricia and drafted Hockenson with the first round pick. When you bring in “your” guys and it doesn’t work out…unemployment.
I agree.
Quin has been OK.
He is trying to build a team that will be good year in and year out,
Not a splash in the pan turn around then back to the cellar.
He has turned over a lot of the roster in the last 2 years.
Doesn’t seem to be working right now, but I think they get one more year.
Maybe it comes together, maybe it gets blown up.
Personally I hope something clicks because the Lions don’t have a good track record with new starts. (or otherwise )
I really think the leash is a lot longer for Quinn/Patricia then some would like to admit.
I have felt from day one that was a 5 year gm/coach pair. I remember when Quinn took over he talked about changing everything in the Lions organization, Scouts, HR, day to day operations, everything.
I think this group is tied to Stafford. I can’t see blowing it up and making coaching changes until Stafford retires or we move him. Why change coaches and gm if Stafford only has a couple years left. You make that change the same time we move on From Stafford.
New Gm, new coach, new QB. I think the next time we have an overhaul we have a MAJOR overhaul.
BQ’s contract was extended to match MP’s contract. Something like 2022. I’m in the minority here but I like the BQ/MP hires. I think if MP has the right assistant coaches and talent, he could do wonders with the team. His game plans/scheme/chess game imo is above average.
I’ve also been very pleased with the results from Bevell’s offense. They’ve led in almost every game. I think they’ve scored on almost all opening drives which we couldn’t do last season. Just need to fix the run game/blocking.
Specials teams have improved steadily but I think they could do better. Just seems to be fading throughout the league. Has there been a punt return for a TD this season?
I would like to see MP take over the defensive play calls until he can find someone better. Maybe PP can fill a role like Gunther Cunningham next season.
Injuries has been a huge factor this year. 18-game regular season could be brutal.
I agree. When the team was a bit healthier early in the year this coaching staff game planned well enough to be the first team to hold Mahomes without a TD pass. And they did this without the team EVER getting remotely healthy on the Dline. That was a game the Lions win if KJ doesn’t offer that ball up for grabs on 1st down at the goal line (officiating aside).
He wasn’t smart enough to realize that drafting a TE in the top 10 was Part of the reason the last GM was fired. Martha should have fired him 5 minutes after he made that pick just to send a message to the next potential GM… lol
If your assessment is real, why didn’t she stop it. She was in the room when they drafted Hockenson. Maybe an old bag billionaire who probably knows little about football in the sense of management and personnel doesn’t really know that much. My guess is most owners don’t know shit more than any jackhole who plays fantasy football and leaves their team in the hand of their subordinates, most whom have some track record of success to the things she doesn’t know about including player personnel and such. Not every owner is Jerry Jones.
That certainly could be said earlier on. They’re doing pretty good these last few years, I believe. But, yeah, it’s easier to tolerate the mistakes when you’re making them. Jerry would never conclude he was in over his head on anything.
…and the OC selected by MP (with no affiliation btw) shut Mack out, even after losing our starting RT and without our starting QB or RB. No way JBC gets that done. No way. Only problem with Flowers is that he was slow coming off injury and the season got away from us before he was able to be himself. I still need to see more of him getting to the QB quicker. It still seems that he’s making plays only when the QB is forced to hold the ball due to sticky coverage. I saw in a next gen stat that he had the “quickest sack” for us and it was like 3.8 seconds. Well… that sucks and most playoff caliber QB’s will light you up all game if you give them that much time to deliver the ball.
In the NFL, you produce or you’re gone, simple as that. The days of accepting mediocre or less are over (I hope). But, in view of the myriad of injuries I can see giving Quinn and Patricia one more year (2020) to get the team into the playoffs. Not many people are going to argue with that, I think.
One thing that bugs me about these guys is the need vs talent issue when it comes to the draft. The Lions are drafting less-talented guys because they fit a certain mold, which IMHO is not the way to improve your talent base. And in so doing, that approach leads to too many draft mistakes. It works in NE for one big reason - they have Bill Belichick. The bad news is, we don’t. Belichick is a proven football genius, Q/P are not; maybe the team will be much better next year, but I gotta be honest, I’m ain’t seeing that. Oh, some better maybe, depending on injuries, but so far the trend is not upward.
