Bob Quinn was interviewed on Jamie and Stoney on 97.1 The Ticket this morning. Among the things he talked about was the difference in drafting for the Patricia-Pasqualoni defense as opposed to the Caldwell-Austin defense. Quinn admitted he feels more comfortable drafting for Patricia, as he’s super-familiar with the concepts.
Among the quotes from Quinn that stood out to me was this:
(In the Patricia-Pasqualoni defense,) “Those smaller, sideline-to-sideline type guys don’t really work in this defense; you need to move on from them.”
I can’t think of anyone that affects more than Jalen Reeves-Maybin.
Right, I heard him state that in his last press conference. That’s a big reason why I am willing to give him a friendlier grade on those first two drafts under his tenure.
I think JRM is probably gone when they cut down to 53, if not sooner. Unless maybe he’s super good on ST, they do care about that. Same deal with Killebrew IMHO.
If I were JRM, i would be drinking a couple gallons worth of protein shakes and those pasteurized egg whites every day, and then hitting the weight room with the intent of gaining 15-20 lbs.
We had Killebrew at Safety who moved to LB last year. I see on the Lions site that he’s listed as a Safety again. His sole value to the team right now is Special Teams. Unfortunately for Killebrew, the Lions invested in a bunch of players with Special Teams ability. My early opinion is that he’s gone.
Another component to his value is that the Lions signed Andrew Adams this off-season, who was a college LB that transitioned to S in the NFL. I think he makes the squad over Killebrew, too.
That was a bit of a distraction from the JRM conversation, but yeah, that one seems like a given as well.
Yes. Quinn was talking about Davis’s versatility in the last interview. Guessing he will ultimately end up outside in the 4-3 and inside in the 3-4 for now. That is, until the next big LB is available in a draft because they don’t come around every year.
BTW, I really like BQ. But this year’s day 2 really has me shaking my head. I sure hope those 2 picks step up in a big way.
I see where you are coming from. I think Davis fits the new defense in that he is at best when attacking the LOS. He seems to struggle the most when they put him in space, and ask him to decide when to pick up a guy in coverage versus playing the run. It’s possible he will improve in that area with time. He only has 2 years of NFL experience.
I’ve watched him in slo-mo on gamepass and see him react to the Center moving the ball faster than anyone, including the other offensive linemen. But in the same game (as you mention) you see him run right out of his zone, clearing the way for an easy first down conversion. To me, that’s thinking too much… when he loses a sense of where the 1st down marker is and backpedals himself clear into the secondary, that’s something you hope he can grow out of. The light could still come on for him. Once he gets past the learning of where his specific fit is, then maybe he’ll be able to react to the game situation and keys a bit more reliably.
