Flying in early April. Is their a tram that goes to the Amtrak Station from the airport? I’ll have time to catch a decent meal before I head out, suggestions on a place close to the Amtrak station? Last time I took Amtrak thru there and stopped I ate at a Mexican restaurant run by, I shit you not, a Chinese family and they nailed it.
The Red Line Max will take you downtown. I think you may have to transfer to get to Union Station where the Amtrack is located. I believe it is the Yellow and Green but am not sure. I know there are a couple of posters here still live in PDX, one has a brew pub, and another has a Ramen Restaurant. Hopefully they can give you more current info, it has been 8 years since I worked there.
Snap! When are you here? Let’s meet for a beer
Everything by the train station is run by Chinese families. It’s in Chinatown literally Some really good food there
April 9th I think, heading to Seattle but making a stop on the way. Then to San Francisco, Fresno., Lake Havasu and maybe Phoenix. I actually might hang in Portland area for a couple days, friends in Boring and a buddy who is a recluse in the mountains but apparently has wifi. Things are pretty loose right now but I left 2 or 3 weeks open, depends on who’s up for what. BTW, is anyone going to the draft in KC?
I’ll be free on the 10th and the 11th, and on the ninth during the day. On the 12th I have to fly to Japan
Happy to meet up and show you around Portland!
I’ll let you know as it gets closer. That date was determined by Allegiant, $89 one way from Des Moines. A bag is $39 and I will probably add one. Amtrak to Seattle is under $30. I’ll fly American the rest of the way using miles, already booked Fresno to Cedar Rapids for 6,000 miles. Staying with family in Seattle/Bainbridge, SF, Fresno and friends in Lake Havasu. I’m a cheap bastard when I travel alone but I never overstay my welcome and I pick up a dinner and cook and clean where I go. My buddy wants to drive down from south of Tacoma to take me to Seattle but honestly I was looking forward to the train ride. Even with the train ride and Portland layover waiting for the train it’s faster than if I booked to Seattle for about 3x the money.
I had an account in Portland back in the day, sold FSC flooring,(bamboo mostly), so I’ve been there but many years ago now. My buddy in Boring used to drink where I bartended and hopefully can make it in to town if I don’t stick around. Even if I head out to Seattle I checked the train schedule and I should have enough time to grab a beer and a sandwich. We’ll figure it out. Take care.
You will enjoy it; I took it to Seattle for a couple Tigers games when I lived in Vancouver WA.
I once took Amtrak from Osceola, IOWA to Denver, San Fran/Oakland, then to Portland, Spokane and on to St Paul. Backpacked Europe on Eurail Passes 4x for 5-8 weeks. Big fan of taking trains when it makes sense. Looking at the schedule though there might not be that much daylight when I would actually board so we’ll see.
The train is fun. I usually go straight for the bar car and sit at the bar most the trip. These days I usually take the Flixbus. It’s quicker than the train and is more comfortable
Baka Umai is the restaurant that LionsBloodNW owns. Trying to get info on stopping there.
Really fantastic food too. And great peeps. In a fun historic Portland neighborhood too
OK, looks like it’s on.
His wife is much nicer than him…lol
Well, Keith filled me in so I may have to hang out in Portland for a day or 2.
OK April 9th is Easter, so not sure if that changes anything. If you’re not available it’s cool, I’ll head up to Seattle.
Great! I took a job doing some project management with the city so I work at 3 PM on Sunday my days off are Monday and Tuesday
Well, the deal is I’m not sure about staying in Portland. I have to go to Texas early so I only have a couple days to be in Seattle, maybe do lunch on Monday if I don’t head north on Sunday. Long story but it screwed up time out there. Wasn’t suppose to be in Texas at all but it’s a family emergency. Anyway, lunch Monday could work, I’ll stay in touch.
Hit me up if you’re coming through Eugene
